Pentax K100D Super Review
The new Pentax K100D Super is a modest upgrade of the popular K100D camera, with a dust removal system borrowed from the pricier K10D model, SDM (Supersonic Drive Motor) lens support and new fastest ISO speed of 3200. The K100D Super also has an aggressive price tag of less than £400 / $600 (including kit lens). This new version of the K100D is otherwise identical to its predecessor, so do the new features and cheaper price really add up to a Super DSLR? Gavin Stoker found out…

Its probably called 'Super' because it supports the new 'Super'sonic lenses which Pentax has just released. The old K100 doesnt support them.
Ive just bought a K100 ( not super ), it costs a mere $400 now. It is a really nice camera. There is a firmware upgrade to support SD HC, which would be the only feature I would consider essential in the super.

Jon, I thought the term 'Super' referred to Gavin's review.

I have an older Pentax dslr and I love it, but I wouldn't buy another one. I don't feel that it is "pro" enough.

Gary, you're far too kind as ever, and Gordon the SLR obviously isn't pitched as a pro camera - but offers a lot of bang for your buck for those newbies trading up from a compact camera for the first time. After a few dodgy years, Pentax appear to be getting something right and that's worth acknowledging.

I found this a very helpful review, but I would have appreciated some comparison with older Pentaxes such As my DL. Particularly, I ownder if there is any improvement in the autofocusing speed in low light, which has been the one negative I have experienced. Thanks for the time, effort and helpful insights.

I also found this a very helpful and informative review, confirming in much greater detail other reviews which have shown how the K100 Super represents very good value for money. I have struggled to make the transition from my analogue Mz30, having bought a Nikon Coolpix until DSLRs came down in price. The Coolpix has driven me crazy with its zero battery life and slow focussing. I am just pleased that that there is now a clear DSLR alternative at a good price.

There's really hard to find anything else to wish from this camera. It's small, very good, sharp picture. I may even consider reducing contrast levels at some shooting situations (unlike previous pentax DSLR's). Shake reduction works great, even if you shoot at 1/8s slow shutter and 120mm tele-zoom range.

On the back of this review I have purchased the K100D Super ( £280 argos u.k) and I have to say that I am not disappointed one little bit..I have had a few point and shoots from the nikon and olympus stables and wanted something that would give me greater flexability and features..what i wanted was a better quality camera for family photos..what I have ended up with was all of the above and a new hobby!! the super is just that 'super' really is a pleasure to use and the picture quality really is very good..now take the camera everywhere with me.. the AA batteries was a big plus for me..duracells last forever in the camera and can be bought anywhere... no more worrying about keeping tabs on the re-charge batts...hate the things! The k100d super gets my 5 stars..nice place to start in the dslr market!
