PhotographyBLOG Review: Fuji FinePix S5000

Fuji FinePix S5000The Fuji FinePix S5000 Zoom looks very much like a traditional SLR camera in terms of styling, but it is actually more like a compact camera in size and weight. Despite its diminutive dimensions, the Fuji FinePix S5000 Zoom has a massive 10x optical zoom which is equivalent to 37-370mm on a 35mm camera. It also features Fuji’s new 4th Generation Super CCD HR sensor and can record images in RAW mode as well as the JPEG file format. And all of this is available for just over £200! So is the FinePix S5000 Zoom a bit of a bargain? Find out in my review.

  1. For me, a huge selling point for this camera is that it comes with a filter adapter. That's quire rare in that price range and a must of any serious photographer with a limited budget.

  2. Reading your review of "the FinePix S5000 Zoom that has a 3.1 megapixel CCD that delivers 6 million recorded pixels", I was surprised not to see any recommendation to use the camera at the 3 Mpixel image size for best result.
Lot's of camera have a digital zoom and it is always recommended to switch off the feature and to use a software to increase the pixel size of the photo.
I've given a quick look at some sample photo and I think the digital zoom is obvious e.g. http://www.photographyblog.com/images/reviews/fuji_finepix_s5000/sample_photos/DSCF0023.jpg
What do you think of my comment ?

  3. Hi Herve.

You're probably right about using the S5000 at 3mp for best results, but I was interested in finding out what it was like at its "advertised" resolution. I think this is waht most people will use, as it's the default setting.

As for the digital zoom, there is no indication that it is being used when you zoom in/out.

  4. Though I agree with you about the quality of the S5000, as I purport on my epinions review of the camera, I have used the video recoriding feature several times with excellent results. Once I recorded a Barbershop quartet singing several songs (I have a 256 Mb card - allows 7 mins of vid). I just recently used it to record my wife's aunt and uncle taking their marriage vows after 60 years of marriage. No one else had a video camera, so mine was quite welcome. You may want to try using it more often. I can send you the quartet vid, though I ssuspect it is quite large.
