28mm Closed

Mark Goldstein | Websites | September 1, 2003 | 8 Comments

The popular online photography magazine 28mm has temporarily closed its virtual doors.

“Due to the recent rise in traffic, 28MM has exceeded it’s bandwidth allowance for the current cycle.

Our hosting bill increases with every visit and we need your help.”

You can help to get 28mm back up and running by making a donation directly to its webhost.

Like 28mm, PhotographyBLOG is run by an enthusiastic individual who’s keen to see the site remain advert and sponsor free. Like 28mm, PhotographyBLOG recently had some bandwidth issues of its own - it exceeded the allocation and the hosting account had to be upgraded, doubling the costs. Like 28mm, you can help to maintain this site by making a donation or buying a print.

No! I guess success has a price to pay. I will be making a donation today.

You might want to consider Google AdSense - I imagine it would cover your hosting costs.

How does Google AdSense work then?

"Google AdSense is for web publishers who want to make more revenue from advertising on their site while maintaining editorial quality. AdSense delivers text-based Google AdWords ads that are relevant to what your readers see on your pages — and Google pays you."

Hmmm...sounds like a good fit for this site.

Anyone else have anything positive/negative to say about this scheme?

I started running the ads in late July (just on my individual archive pages, as that allows them to be more "subject relevant"). They are quite easy to customoize in color so they don't clash with your site design. While I'm sure my hosting fees are less than yours, in August the ads equalled my $29.95 hosting fee plus $1.93 ... profit!

With higher traffic levels (and corresponding click-thru levels), I'd expect you might achieve the same balance of ad income vs. hosting fees.

And after nearly seven years of paying my own hosting fees, a mere $1.93 profit puts a big smile on my face.

Sounds good! It says in the small-print that blogs aren't allowed, but your site is a blog, so I guess the rules are pretty bendy grin

I think it says "personal sites," but you're right, I didn't think I'd qualify. However, after seeing the ads on numerous other weblogs, I made an application (it also says in the small print you're not supposed to write about the ad program on your site, once you're a participant).

I really don't know what the actual criterion are. I wonder if it has anything to do with how well your site shows up in their index, because, well, Google loves me. But I can attest that a human behind the Google firewall probed my site thoroughly, as well as did a number of searches on my business name ... looking for skeletons (lawsuits, file trading, etc.), I assume.

This site seems perfectly appropriate for the ads.

I've been pretty pleased with the results on my site. Your site is not a "personal" site, but more of a "news" site - I'm sure it would qualify.

The ads on your site are very targeted Alex - the first one is a question that a lot of weblog owners want to do:

Photos on your Weblog
Illustrate your blog or website with your own photos

So from a relevancy point of view, AdSense looks as though it could add some value, rather than just being annoying grin

I signed-up for AdSense yesterday and have already been accepted into the scheme. I'll probably run it for a trial period and see if people object to it / see if it makes a profit for me!
