3 Megapixel Nokia N80 Cameraphone Announced
Nokia Press Release
Nokia Nseries enters the digital home with Nokia N80 - Optimized for both work and play, the small WLAN-enabled Nokia N80 is the world’s first UPnP handset
Nokia Mobility Conference 2005, Barcelona, Spain/Espoo, Finland - Nokia today introduced the Nokia N80, the first ever handset to enable seamless home media networking between compatible TVs, audio systems and PCs. The Nokia N80 reflects and harmonizes work and personal life through leading on-the-go productivity tools, multimedia entertainment and mobile photography in a design that communicates success. Weighing only 134 grams, the compact yet feature-rich 3G multimedia device is packed with performance, providing fast internet access and convenient intuitive browsing as well as the possibility to send and receive emails at Wireless LAN (WLAN) speeds.
“A multimedia computer that genuinely enriches people’s lives with connected, mobile multimedia experiences, the Nokia N80 is the size of a stack of business cards,” said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Multimedia, Nokia. “The technological leadership of Nokia Nseries comes together in the Nokia N80, offering people a new, unparalleled experience of enjoying media in the living room by just using the Nokia N80. Comprising the functionality of a highly advanced multimedia computer, the Nokia N80 empowers people to pursue professional goals and personal passions with equal fervor.”
Multimedia connectivity in the Digital Home
With simple to use yet advanced UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) technology*, the pioneering Nokia N80 can be used to tap into the digital home network, acting almost as a remote control, enabling secure and convenient access to compatible PCs, audio equipment and TVs.** Consequently, images and video stored on the Nokia N80 or a compatible PC can be viewed wirelessly on the living room TV, while listening to music stored on the device through the living room audio system. Printing is now faster too, as Nokia N80 users can print wirelessly to any compatible UPnP-enabled home printer or printing kiosk.
Advanced, high speed internet in your pocket
Nokia N80 is the first quadband handset designed to work on 3G (WCDMA 1900 or 2100), WLAN, EDGE and four GSM bands (850/900/1800/1900), enabling broadband access from virtually anywhere on the planet. Incorporating the latest productivity functions in addition to 3G and EDGE data connectivity, people can use the Nokia N80 at more than 136,000*** public WLAN hotspots around the world to access the internet and send large emails or upload high quality images to an online service. Additionally, the Nokia N80 supports the new Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map, featuring a semi-transparent zoomed-out overall view of the web page, enabling users to intuitively navigate to all corners as well as see the web site as it was originally designed. With the experience further heightened by the device’s superior high definition display (352 x 416 pixels, up to 262,144 colors), which incorporates 90% more pixels than QVGA displays commonly found on smartphones and PDAs, the Nokia N80 also incorporates MPEG4 AVC decoding support for high quality video streaming.
High quality photos and videos in just a snap
With great ergonomics for image capture, the Nokia N80 is also an excellent mobile photography device for capturing, collecting and sharing moments and memories. In addition to incorporating a 3 megapixel camera with capture key for fast and stable camera activation, full-screen landscape capture utilizing the entire available high definition display, and a dedicated close-up mode switch, the Nokia N80 also features CIF video capture with inbuilt video stabilization. Moreover, the Nokia N80 incorporates large internal memory of up to 40 MB, which can be further expanded with a hot swap miniSD card of up to 2 GB, allowing users to store up to 1000 high quality images on the device.
Your choice of music on the go
Supporting a wide range of digital music formats, the Nokia N80 boasts a digital music player as well as stereo FM radio and support for Visual Radio****, which provides listeners with a richly interactive information channel, including information on the song and artist currently playing. Furthermore, thanks to the integrated UPnP technology, transferring music between the Nokia N80 and a compatible PC is easier than ever. Alternatively, users can transfer their favorite music via USB 2.0 by simply dragging and dropping from a compatible PC onto the device. As a result of its powerful music features, the Nokia N80 qualifies as a part of the Nokia XpressMusic device range. The XpressMusic feature brand makes it easy for consumers to identify Nokia products that provide a superior mobile music experience.
The Nokia N80, which is based on S60 3rd Edition and Symbian OS, is planned to be commercially available in the first quarter of 2006 with an estimated, unsubsidized sales price of approximately 500 euros.
*UPnP technology, a standard required for an interoperable network in the digital home, enables automatic discovery and remote control of devices, including networked devices and services, such as network-attached PCs and printers, internet gateways, and consumer electronics equipment. UPnP is independent of any particular operating system, programming language, or physical medium (e.g. it can be deployed on top of any IP bearer - WLAN, Ethernet cable, etc).
**Current TVs and stereo systems can be Digital Home enabled with a media link device.

I've too been waiting for the arrival of the Nokia N80, but have since discovered that the mentioned 'cat-of-matches' does in-fact ignite at slightly more than 20cm from a standard bar heater. It may have been the slight over use of glue, or the fact it had a very hairy tail.
Hope this helps.

I can confirm that the Nokia N80 is being released exclusively to Vodafone and will be available at the beginning of May 2006 in Phones4u stores in limited numbers.
The main tariff it will be available on will be a new £40 per month tariff giving 500mins and 250texts. The handset will cost £50 on this tariff and will not be discounted to free.
Visit your local Phones4u store at the beginning of May to see this handset, the new Sony Ericsson W810i and the Benq Siemens EF81 exclusive to Phones4u.

thats wrong the w810i is availible now in carphone warehouse and is not exclusive to p4u the n80 is 3g handset and 3 have the first rights to it 3 concessions will have it 2 weeks b4 p4u i work for p4u and have spoke to the 3 rep

#34 CSJ Phones4u
Craig, I didn't say the W810i was exclusive to P4U.
The N80 is a 3G handset but it will be initially exclusive to Vodafone then O2 will have it on their network, I doubt T-mobile will even support the handset this quarter. The Network "3" will not have the first rights to this handset simply because it is a UMTS handset.
The Exclusive handset to P4U is the Benq-Siemens EF81 which is a slim 3G Razr style handset with quite an amazing screen and a brushed metal case. This will be available on 3.

Wow!! I finally have the N80 in my hands since it was just released. Of course, the year is 2414 and I am using the trans-temporal internet browser to post here over 400 years in the past!! You have no idea how long THIS feature delayed the release of the N80. Now that I have it, I can't wait for the N93 to come out. I am already putting aside the funds so that my great great great grandchildren can buy one.

Phones4u POS show "3 Megapixel Videophone". The long window POS shows no network logo and the in store A3 POS which is on the reverse of the W810i POS shows the Vodafone logo with "500mins and 250texts".
The 6280 is on 3 as is the Benq EF81.

Craig,
The N80 came in on the delivery today (Sat 13th) and they were all on Vodafone as expected.
All sold out within an hour.
It will be out 15th May on o2, P4U stores may not get stock of this the same day however.
Did you get a chance to look at the handset? What do you think? I didn't love the slide not being sprung loaded, apart from that, I didn't see it long enough to make a proper judgement!!!
Gutted about the EF81 delays!
Lets hope the EF81 goes on sale soon as well as the N80 on all the networks, the N91, E61 and D800 pink soon too!

Hi
I really want to upgrade to the N80 on Tmobile. T mobile wont support it but in p4u on sat they told me that by the end of the week generic gsm handsets will be available so then they can do it, Carphonewarehouse will be a couple of weeks behind and the link didnt know what I was talking about. Can anyone shed anymore light?
Cheers
4:38 pm - Sunday, May 14, 2006
#57 Chandan
Barbie,
P4U will probably not have the GSM handsets in stock anytime soon, they will be locked to Vodafone or O2.
We have had the N70 for nearly a year and have not had ONE GSM handset, they have been locked to each network. I expect this will be the case with the N80.
Even IF the Generic GSM handsets were available, the P4U Tills will not allow the handset being sold on any T-mobile Tariff if it has not been supported by the network.
An example of this is the much awaited Sony Ericsson W810i, P4U have the unlocked GSM handsets but cannot sell the phones on any network except Vodafone or O2.
It will be a long wait for the N80 on T-mobile, especially on an upgrade unfortunately.

As you maybe aware that this phone was suppose to be released today. I'd phone 02 this morning and they said that the date has been put back to 5 June 06. I'd also called a few 02 stores, and they have all said that we don't have a release date but there expecting them in, in the next few weeks.

It looks like were going to be waiting for a bit longer.

i have just been using the N80 in the car and i was reaching down to get a carton of juice out of the glovebox, only took a few seconds, but. i sort of moved from my lane into the other lane and when i noticed i paniced and over compensated with the wheel, i have now mounted the kerb and hit a road sign. I cant start my car and i think a man in a red shirt phoned the police, i can see him looking out of his window now. Can someone quickly tell me what to tell the police when they get here? and please be quick i dont have much time.
11:38 pm - Thursday, May 18, 2006

Audrey Crackett - Are you sure its a red shirt or could it have been a white shirt but now it has blood all over it?..
1) Tell the police you was dazed by the sun..
2) A baby rabbit was crossing the road and you had to steer away..
11:27 am - Friday, May 19, 2006
#67 pinkting
well its an obviouse answer, the nokia n80 is so advanced that it put you in a trance whilst trying to gain control of the car but, luckily for you you managed to regain control of yourself and battled with the phone for control of the steering wheel, hence crashing into the signpost.thank goodness the phone is also advanced enough to know when its in the wrong, otherwise there could be red tshirts everywhere.

Right I too have been phoning up o2 for the release dates of the N80. My upgrade was available from March 23rd so I have been waiting all this time. At that point they told me 1st of May. So I waited, 1st of May comes and then its the 15th. I thought 'if ive waited this long whats another 2 weeks'. Phone on the 15th, they say 22nd. Whats another week eh? Phone on the 22nd (yesterday), they say computers down but they have the 22nd of June!!! So I phone back today thinking this can't be right, and they have assured me it will be released in 'the next two days' and that 'it's on the system but not available to sell'. I guess ill be phoning all day tomorrow then
1:17 pm - Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Are you sure thats correct Deano?
I just got your message so thought I'd ring to be on the safe side. I was told again that the release date is 5 June. They've actually put me on the reserve list this time round for when it does come available.
1:30 pm - Tuesday, May 23, 2006
#70 Deano
I rang just under an hour ago and that was exactly what i was told. I wasn't told anything about a reserve list. But I'm not calling back cause their system was so slow! They said it was down yesterday evening. I might try and call them back before they close to see whats going on again.

I have now been told that o2 are quoting £129 for the n80 and they are taking in small shipments of them in the lead up to the official june 5th release date.
2 things:
1) Will the 'im changing networks' excuse get o2 to offer the phone for free? (If not what will?)
2) Ive heard wifi on the orange n80s does not let you connect to your home connection. Any news on the o2 ones?
1:52 pm - Tuesday, May 23, 2006
#72 Vijay
I've already made a few enquiries about my upgrade and they've offered me half price line rental for 12 mths (I'm on 02 Leisure time plus). But not sure what they will offer when N80 comes out. It depends on who you speak to, some of them offer you a good deal and some are not bothered.
I’ve been monitoring another forum and found that person did have a problem with his Orange N80 connecting to his home Wi-Fi but he managed to resolve it. Therefore I cant see it been a problem apart understanding how to do it and setting it up.

For those of you thinking of using N80 as a GPS via TomTom
Does TomTom work on TomTom Mobile 5?
TomTom Support Team - "At present this is not the case, the Nokia N80 is not currently supported by our software. We can not provide a specific date/timeframe as to when this may change and can only recommend that you continue to check our website on a regular basis for updates relating to this matter"

ok,so ive jst spoken to o2 about the fact that they might be charging £129 for n80 and yes its true,so i obviously went for the angle of "well orange will give me the fone today for £50 with my same current tarrif i have with o2 (online 200).they said they cant reduce handset price but will charge me £20 pm for the whole 12 months instead of £30 pm,basically the handset will only cost me a £10er doing it this way,so yes haggeling works,
hooray......................

Ive had mine from CFW on o2 since 3rd May, I have connected it to my wireless home connection and it works great, but faster to use PC than surf with it. The camera is outstanding with most features found on a normal digital one. bit wide on the dimensions side but you get used to it. Ive got Tomtom mobile and can confirm it definatley doesnt work on it (YET apparently):-/ all in all its great little phone and I bought a 2GB card on ebay (£40) and music is cool on it and for the size of the speaker it kicks out a good loud sound. you get a 128 standard with it. I also paid £129 and they wouldnt shift on that price even though they quoted my £240 to start with. Im happy

Jamie - You can get the phone on 02 via Carphonewarehouse but they then handle the billing and everything, don’t know much about it. 02 themselves like you said will have the phone available on 5 June. I've managed to prebook mine.. but not sure on how much it going to cost. There a few ppl on here speculate that it will be £129. Hope this helps.

Your joking!
What are they playing at!?
So far Vodaphone and Orange have already released the phone on there network..
I’m afraid to call them now cos I’d been phoning every week to see what the status was on the phone since April. I bet my call history with them will be quite big.

You know what, i dont even think they know when its going to be released themselves. Theyve been telling different stories to different people. Ive also been told by one o2 customer service advisor that there is a reserve list that ive been put on. When i phoned up next time the guy said there was no such thing and o2 cannot do that for phones they dont have!? I seriously think itll be the end of June before we see this phone on o2.

I have just spoken to o2 who advised me the phone will be released to customers on the 15.06.06 at a cost of £60 (Well that was the cost for myself, and i pay around £30 a month)

I really wish that was true. Im sure its not though. Ive been 'advised' wrongly so many times, if I got £1 every time they were wrong i'd be a millionaire. The price theyve given you they must have just guessed. Because as i've been told 100 times, they dont have the phone yet, so it's not on their system, so they dont have details.... I'll still be calling on the 15th though
Its a nice phone.

N80 - Available at Carphone Warehouse, P4U and Orange shops today. Deals as confusing as ever make it virtually impossible to work out which is best. Evryone offers a deal about £40-£45 month line rental and phone free. Can't find better on the web yet which seems odd since they don't have to rent the shop etc... will keep looking.

Why does it seem that the USA is always so behind in these sorts of matters. I mean I wanted this phone and had to go through some strange hurdles to get it but it still has not arrived at my door. If anyone in the UK is looking for a deal on the N80 just go to froogle and it will help. As far as the US people go....good luck. I'm not sharing my secret.

Dude!!! I spoke to them this morning, managed to get mine for 49 quid each!! As I was upgrading two of them!! They couldn't tell me when I would recieve them as she said they were on back order, but she did say it would be soon. I might call them later to check the progess!!

Mine has been dispatched. The price doesn't matter that much to me. But I am only on the £19 a month contract. So thats probably why. I forgot to say they took £50 off so i got the phone for £179.00 and they reduced my contract cost to £11.00 so I'm not really paying that much.

I called them back. They reduced my contract cost by £14 a month as they can't take any more then £50 off the quoted price of the phone for my tariff '£229'.
And i've worked out how good a deal I have.
They took off £50 so thats £179
Then £14 off my tariff a month for 12 months totals to £168
£229 - £50 - £168 = £11
So technically i'm paying £11 for the phone :D and next year ill have a really cheap contract.
02 only have silver n80's. Anyone know if the covers are changeable? Ebay has black covers for around a fiver but are they all good or not?

I would be interested in knowing when you actually recieve it!! They couldn't give me an ezact date for delivery this morning the girl said maybe upto 5 days. I phoned back this afternoon and spoke to someonelse and they said they are still waiting for stock and it maybe the 15 of JULY!!!! I hope not!!

They told me I would be one of the first 50 to recieve them as part of my deal with them. They had 50 in today, thats why they were allowed to take orders. 02 dont do backup orders unless they have some stock. It was because I made up an orange deal i was going to move to and they fell for it.
I am guaranteed delivery in 1-2 days. It has already been dispatched. Ill let you know when i get it. I just want to know about the changeable fascias.

I've got an O2 contract which expires any day, what is the best way to get a cheap deal on this phone on 02? What do I say to them etc?
I have a £19.99 tariff at the moment but am willing to pay about £25-£30 a month. I don't want to have to pay a big price for the phone straight away because it might quickly go down to free.
I didn't realise my contract expires so soon so I have to call in the next few days. Please help.

Its on the o2 website once you log in.
Just tell them youll switch to orange because theyll offer you a better deal. And mention you wouldnt mind raising the price of your contract.

Ive got the phone and..... i gotta say.... IT IS AMAZING! Best phone ive ever seen. Everything works great.
Just one question.. phone recognises and allows WLAN connection and it says it is active. But when I click on web, it still comes up with the 'connection needed to server needed, connect?' message and if I click yes, it comes up 'connecting via 02 gprs'. Does this mean Im paying 02 to connect?? I thought WLAN was free to use, this question sounds stupid to me... but what am I doing wrong??

OK so I called up 02 and I have got the phone for free and have a tariff of £25 a month, but it's for 18 months. The woman said that they don't allow 12 month contracts for the phone at all, is that true?
I'm excited about getting the phone, bit worried though as I want to use the TomTom sat nav (which I'm going to buy in a few months) but it's not yet working.
