A-Digital-Eye Reviews SmartDisk FlashTrax

Mark Goldstein | Digital | October 9, 2003 | 6 Comments

SmartDisk FlashTraxA-Digital-Eye have just reviewed the 30Gb version of the SmartDisk FlashTrax, a portable storage device that stores high-resolution images transferred from any flash memory card onto the built-in USB 2.0 hard drive and displays them on its 3.5” LCD screen.

“FlashTrax by SmartDisk is a portable storage device for backing up your digital camera pictures while on the road. I was able to test this unit out while on a vacation in Europe. FlashTrax safely stores images copied from any memory cards onto the built-in 30GB USB 2.0 hard drive and displays them on a 3.5” LCD that outperforms tiny on-camera screens. A built-in MP3 player makes this device even more attractive! FlashTrax allows you to store, view and play all sorts of media files, all in one palm-size portable device.”

Nice in theory, but $499 is a bit pricey. I got a one gig CF card instead. Doesn't help with viewing what I took, but at least I don't fill up the card so quickly. I have a 128meg CF card that I bought so I could go out and take pictures RIGHT NOW.

Wow! Very nice! If I didn't have the flu, I'd be out there now trying something similar grin Instead I'm sitting in a darkened room rambling incoherently...

Just bought mine The 80gb version
Absolutley briliant , i am glad I waited for the 80GB
I tried a PHOTOTAINER which looks excatly the same BUT isn't
The software and speed are different
I could not get it to complltely download my 1gd card fully
I thoutht the Flash Trax was the same so I was waiting for the Nikon Cool Walker
But that only has 30GB and now I am told via a contact in the trade is being held back to at least mid July 2004 becuase of some "tecnical diffuiculties "
The Cool Walker seems to be very limted and over priced at £399 for 30Gb
I decided to try the fast trax from amazon.co.uk
because of the price and also no problem should I find it was the same as the PHOTAINERER
It ain't
It works like a dream
The Pic set up is so easy and the screen easy to follow
I bought it to complement my Eos 10D for my holiday
I have found I have got so much space that I have now dipped my toe into MP3
Its GREAT you can easly set up play lists
if not just drag & drop from windows via the USB2 and away you go , it has an internal speaker , but try headphones , the sound is great ,as you use any headphones , you will not be adveritsing what is on the other end , as you do with an apple I pod who make theselves targets for having it forcefully removed, ie mugged!
If you can streach th the 80Gb BUY IT
