The "Across the Buildings" photo competition encourages photographers to document Felice Varini's artwork Across the Buildings, a stunning installation spanning nine heritage buildings at Kings Cross. The contest has been launched by the King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership in association with Eurostar. There will be one lucky winner per month and the prize is two Eurostar tickets to Paris – home of the artist. The first winner - Ronan Haughton, a 34-year-old Enterprise and Innovation Contracts Manager - has already been announced. He snapped the winning shot (above) on his iPhone and found himself inspired by the changes taking place at King’s Cross. "“I wanted to capture some of the old and the new of King’s Cross, from the Regent’s Canal to the more modern canal side steps, artificial grass and of course the Felice Varini artwork," Ronan said. "“Across the Buildings is very impressive. Its scale is immediate and adds a new reflection to the changing landscape." The competition will run until the artwork is uninstalled. The winning photograph will be announced at the end of each month.

Competition continues and next winner will be revealed in September
Ronan Haughton, a local worker in King’s Cross, has scooped two tickets to Paris simply by posting a picture to his Instagram feed. Ronan, who works at Central Saint Martins, snapped an art installation by Felice Varini in King’s Cross on his iPhone to enter the Across the Buildings Photography Competition. His photo was deemed to be the best of scores of entries and he will receive two Eurostar tickets to Paris as his prize.
Felice Varini’s ‘Across the Buildings’ has become a popular feature at King’s Cross with more than 30,000 people already visiting the viewing platform to get a good look at the 542m artwork which spans across nine heritage buildings.
The King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership launched a competition in association with Eurostar asking the public to help document the stunning temporary piece. The first winner has now been announced but the search continues for other fantastic photographs.
Ronan, a 34-year-old Enterprise and Innovation Contracts Manager, snapped the winning shot on his iPhone and found himself inspired by the changes taking place at King’s Cross.
He said: “I wanted to capture some of the old and the new of King’s Cross, from the Regent’s Canal to the more modern canal side steps, artificial grass and of course the Felice Varini artwork.
“Across the Buildings is very impressive. Its scale is immediate and adds a new reflection to the changing landscape. King’s Cross is a very inspiring place and I find myself using my iPhone to document the dynamic changes taking place every day.”
Choosing the winner was a difficult choice, but after sifting through all the entries one of our resident photographers Brendan Bell picked Ronan’s photograph because it is “a very well composed and executed image reflecting both the area’s historic and contemporary elements.”
Ronan took his photograph close to the canal side steps in Granary Square and captured a part of the art work on the historic Fish and Coal Buildings. The budding photographer will now receive two return Eurostar tickets to Paris, the home of artist Felice Varini who created the Across the Buildings installation.
But there’s still time to enter the competition and more Eurostar tickets up for grabs. The competition will run until the artwork is uninstalled. You can submit as many entries as you like, but you can only win once. The winning photograph will be announced at the end of each month and all entries will appear on http://www.kingscross.co.uk/Varini.
Entrants are encouraged to take a picture of any part of the piece from any of the public areas on-site, and can use whatever camera they have handy, whether that’s a mobile phone or a top-of-the-range long-lens SLR.
Images can be submitted by email, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and all entries will appear on http://www.kingscross.co.uk/varini-photography.
