Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G IF-EDNikon UK Press Release 28/01/04

The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm F3.5-4.5G IF-ED is the newest addition to a growing range of lenses designed specifically for Nikon digital SLR cameras.

With a practical wide-angle to telephoto zoom range of 18mm to 70mm, it offers the analogue 135 format equivalent to 27-105mm for general photography with Nikon D series digital SLRs.  It also enables anyone to start shooting digital SLR photography, irrespective of the current camera system they might own.

This is the first lens of its class to be offered in DX format, enabling a wide focal length range ratio. It effectively upgrades two existing AF Nikkors - it is smaller, lighter and more versatile than the existing AF 28-105 while offering a greater zoom range than the similarly sized AF 18-35.

The DX 18-70mm incorporates three ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements to minimize chromatic aberration and colour fringing, and aspherical elements to spread the light intensity evenly across the image circle with minimal distortion. The new lens continues the trend of G-type lens without aperture ring to offer precise 1/3 step aperture control via the camera body.

The AF-S DX 18-70mm lens incorporates Nikon’s exclusive SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for fast and quiet auto focus performance, whilst internal focus technology maintains lens size and balance.

The lens is available either in kit form with the D70, or separately, for users of all Nikon D series cameras that share the DX Format sensor standard.

The estimated RRP for the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm F3.5-4.5G IF-ED is £299.99

looks like a very nice walk around lense.
I've pre-ordered the 17-55, but the range of this new one is much more appealing. (and I don't need fast aperture as well)..

ah, the doubt...

I am a professional photographer who recently purchased and returned a Nikon D70/lens kit which included the 18-70mm lens. B&H Photo in NYC acknowledeged my complaint about the lack aof sharpness the lens exhibited upon returning it.
It was absolutely unable to focus "tack sharp" at any point above 45mm on the zoom. Quite frankly, I was very upset with Nikon's LACK OF QUALITY control. I own about $!5,000 of PERFECT NIKON PRODUCTS. This was a terrible and totally unexpected happening. I purchased another D70 without the above mentioned "Kit Lens" and used my current Nikkor lens pool. The results were, as expected, Nikon tack sharp accuracy. Incidently, the photography store sales people in the store I purchased the second D70 without the Kit Lens also let it be know that Nikon was having a great problem with this new lens in that it had great difficulties delivering sharp immages. I am sure that Nikon will correct this problem. I would still like to acquire a PERFECT VERSION of this 17-70mm Nikkor lens when available for the price differential as it was sold with the D70 as a KIT.

I too purchased the D70 kit and just shot two family reunions. After looking at my photos I was horrified and thought I needed glasses, I was able to clean the pictures up in Photoshop, but I really don't have the time to do it, why should I have too. I agree with you chuck. I am very disappointed.
