Akamera.no Tests Canon 50mm Lenses
The Norwegain website Akamera.no have published a test of 3 Canon 50mm lenses - the Canon EF 50mm 1.8 Mark II, Canon EF 50mm 1.4 USM and Canon EF 50mm 2.5 Compact Macro. There are an excellent set of comparitive sample shots so that you can see the differences between the lenses, even if norwegian isn’t one of your strong points.

I really query their way of testing lenses by taking photos of PCB board at a very close focusing distant. Most lenses except macro are designed to perform best at infinity. Also, the performance of a lens at a close focusing distant has no definite relation to its performance at infinity. Therefore one lens performing better than another at close focusing distant does not mean that it is better at infinity as well.
This approach is even more questionable when used to test a macro lens against non-macro - one is designed to perform best at close focusing distant and the other at infinity.

I see nothing questionable with that test, which I did personally. If one lens performs better at close range, it is valuable information for the potential customer.
In addition, the test referred to also included the 50mm 1.4 USM and 50mm 1.8 II lenses. Hence, this is not a test which merely tested one standard lens against a macro. The different performance of the two standard 50mm lenses certainly gives additional and very relevant information.
Lastly, I also did a test of the two Canon standard 50mm lenses, a test which is also published at akam.no, and which can be read at this address:
