Exhibiting photographers: Colm McCarthy, Sebrina Fassbender and Liz Mares
The Viewfinder Photography Gallery in Brixton proudly presents “American Girl,” an exhibition featuring the work of three American photographers who have turned their focus on female subjects from their homeland.
This intimate portrait of a girl takes many faces through Liz Mares’ surreal, abstract studies of inner and outer beauty, McCarthy’s depictions of isolation and loneliness, and Fassbender’s documentary-style images of New York sex workers. The photographs by McCarthy, Fassbender and Mares coalesce in a striking, troubling and brutally honest portrayal of American women.
The photographer Colm McCarthy poses the questions: “How do women see themselves when they’re alone? What sort of toll does it take on the inner self in order to perpetuate the societal expectations of the outer self?”
“American Girl” subverts the notion of the classic female nude, showing us the inner struggle women face in achieving beauty and perfection. The women featured in the photographs are both desperate and powerful, appalling and alluring.
