American Photo Editor’s Choice 2007

Sigma DP1American Photo magazine have announced this year’s Editor’s Choice of everything and anything photography related, which includes the soon to be released Sigma DP1 (pictured).

“It happens every year, but it’s worth repeating that there are more products and product categories than ever in this year’s Editor’s Choice. All that coverage required a bigger-than-ever team of experts. In addition to regular AP contributors Jonathan Barkey, Aimee Baldridge, Steve Pollock, and Jack Howard, the group included several trusted colleagues from Popular Photography & Imaging, including Dan Richards, Debbie Grossman, and Pete Kolonia. Their combined authority makes this year’s Editor’s Choice the go-to guide for buying your photo equipment.”

I guess with a highly competitive market space that digital cameras are traded in, there has to be clear points of difference between the continual stream of new products that become available to the consumer, thus a progressive stream of new features or types of cameras continue to exist. (much like to the hyper-competitive mobile phone market)

The fact that an Editor's Choice award goes to a camera which has never been field tested and has not been released further erodes my level of confidence in a publication(American Photo) which in the past few years concentrates pretty much on flesh photography to sell itself rather than explore the genres of photography in the professional way one might expect from a magazine of this nature. IMO this sort of thing is paid for advertising by the manufacturers as what can be the point of nominating this and other vapourware products long before they are released.
