Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di AFBob Atkins has published a review of the new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di AF lens With equivalent own-brand lenses from the likes of Nikon, Canon and Minolta costing several times more, the £300 Tamron lens could find its way into quite a few photographer’s bags (and is currently in mine).

“Compared with the Canon 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS ($400) at the same f-stop, the Tamron is generally sharper and more resistant to flare, though of course the zoom range is less and it doesn’t have IS. Overall I have no hesitation in recommending the Tamron SP AF28-75/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro to anyone looking for a fast lens with this zoom range. The fact that it comes with a standard 6 year warranty is an added bonus.”

This f/2.8, 28-75mm SP zoom lens is quite a technical achievement for Tamron's lens designers offering 3 LD's, 4 Aspherical's, and 2 XR optical elements for better flare/ca/light bending control. Although not a Macro lens per se, it offers a minimum focus of about 12", with 7 rounded blades.

Yet this lens lacks stabilization, has distortion at 28mm, none at 40mm evening out, and some at 75mm.

Vignetting exists at f/2.8, is well controlled at f/4, acceptable at f/5.6, and very good at f/8.0.

The price is about right for this lens considering the pros and cons for the average consumer or professional photographer.
