New Version of Innovated iPhone Photo App Released, Reaches Top 5 of All Paid Apps
Oct 30, 2008—Nevercenter, makers of the number one photography app for the iPhone, CameraBag, have released version 1.3 of the popular app with updates including a much-anticipated fisheye lens filter. The app, which has remained in the top 5 most popular paid iPhone apps since soon after its release in late September, allows iPhone and iPod Touch owners to quickly and easily improve their photos by flipping between pre-defined camera filters. CameraBag currently has eight filters in total based on toy cameras, film from certain time periods and other popular effects.
“I think a key to CameraBag’s success has been taking some of the imperfections and limitations inherent in a 2 megapixel cameraphone, and turning them into artistic positives with the realistic camera effects we apply,” said Tom Plewe, President of Nevercenter.
Prominent photographers agree, saying CameraBag takes the iPhone camera to a new artistic level. “Now, thanks to CameraBag, I’m actually having a blast with my iPhone,” wrote Derrick Story, professional photographer, O’Reilly Digital Media Evangelist and author of The Digital Photography Companion.
The app has appealed to camera aficionados and novices alike with the artistic treatment it adds to iPhone photos, and the option it gives users to post visually impressive photos right from their phone. CameraBag users have already uploaded over 1200 photos to the CameraBag Flickr group.
“The app takes a pretty basic camera and gives it new life. It fosters creativity,” wrote reviewer Giles Turnbull for Cult of Mac. “You start walking around with your eyes peeled for things that might make a good Helga, or a good Lolo.”
New filters are being added every couple of weeks in regular updates. The current filters included in CameraBag are:
· Helga - A square-format toy camera feel with washed-out highlights and old-school vignetting.
· 1974 - This is your father’s camera. Faded, tinted, and hip.
· Lolo - Shoot from the hip and take life as it comes with vibrant, colorful shots.
· Cinema - Dramatic, moody, wide-screen stills from the movie of your life.
· 1962 - Dynamic black and whites from the photojournalists of a bygone era.
· Ansel - Smooth gradation from black to white.
· Infrared - Simulation of the popular landscape photography technique.
· Fisheye - Popular fish eye lens effect - for fun effects, try it in combination with other filters.
While CameraBag is the company’s first iPhone app, Nevercenter has been developing graphics software since 2003, most notably the critically acclaimed 3D modelling application, Silo. More iPhone apps are on the way.
