Cannibalising the MuVo2

Mark Goldstein | Digital | March 5, 2004 | 6 Comments

Wired.com have an interesting story about the hacking of Creative Technology’s MuVo2 MP3 player. Apparently the MuVo2 contains a 4Gb Hitachi MicroDrive, which normally retails for around $500. The MuVo2 only costs $200 (how much markup are Hitachi making on the stand-alone drive?!) so photographers have been buying the MuVo2 and removing the MicroDrive to use in their digital cameras. Not surprisingly the MuVo2 is said to be in short supply at the moment…

“The Hitachi microdrive is the same size as a standard CompactFlash, or CF, card, a popular storage medium for digital cameras. In fact, the drive is designed to be interchangeable with CF cards. The drive can simply be inserted into the camera and formatted to store pictures. The drive can also be read with most CF card readers.”

If you’re interested in this hack then andymack.com has a step-by-step guide…

Thanks to Stephen Anstey for sending me the links grin

UPDATED 08/03/04: Photo.net have also added a step-by-step guide to dismantling the MuVo 2.

On the similar issue, mini iPod also use the hitachi 4GB microdrive, which sold for $250. The problem is that the drives shipped to apple for mini iPod have different configuration which prevent the drive from taking out of iPod and use on the digicam. There are many users at dpreview forum have report getting the drive from mini iPod to work. And also, the rumor about the 4GB microdrive in Creative MuVO2 are solder is just a RUMOR, and nothing more.

I did this several weeks ago and can confirm that the 4 GB drive works fine when reformatted in a Canon 10D. I replaced the 4GB drive in the Muvo with a 1GB drive and it works fine, but you have to reload the firmware for the Muvo first. The FW is available from Creative's website. The 4GB drive is not soldered into the Muvo, just held in place by a strip connector and several screws. The hardest part was not losing the screws and making sure that I connected the 1GB card the right way round.

I bought the new Muvo2 and put the 4GB drive straight into my Sony F828 and it didn't work. I then formatted it from the PC and it still doesn't work. I have read many other places that Creative have changed the disk from CF type to ATA.

Anyone know a way around this? As if not then I have just wasted £180! :-(

Warning - cheaters out there!!!
I just purchased the Nomad MuVo2 to have a 4gb microdrive for my Sony DSC F828 and find, like so many others, the manufactures Hitachi and Creative have joined forces to cheat their customers. Without warning and while knowing why so many of the MuVo2s were being purchased (why else would anyonw want one) the manufactures decided to change the microdrives so they would not work in other devices. I blame Hitachi since why whout the MP3 manufactures care, they can sell more. But Hitachi wants to sell them at a much higer cost (twice the cost) directly. I am for and will, personally, avoiding all Hitachi products. Those cheaters should not get our hard earned money any more. There is lots of competion for them in all the products they sell so why buy from the cheaters?
Now, I have a 4gb microdrive of no use and a MuVo2 that will not work - for money the cheaters made out on - this time!! I have just started my campain to give the cheaters their reward: much less business. I am retired so I have lots of time to devote to this.

Why bother?

You can buy the drive here for $151 at Newegg.com:
