Canon Announces Powershot G5
Canon today announced its new #700/$899, 5-megapixel successor to the Powershot G3, the black or silver Powershot G5. Digital Photography Now seem to have the scoop on the new G5; they have several pictures of a real camera being handled by the site’s owner, Ian Burley.
Confusion still reigns over why the G4 name was missed out, with some websites commenting that the number 4 is undesirable in some parts of the world. Possible answers on a postcard please!
UPDATE: Having just read the Canon press release, the PowerShot G5 will be available from July 2003 for #679 RRP inc VAT. The PowerShot G5 1Gb Microdrive Kit will be available from July 2003 for #799 RRP inc VAT.

I read that Apple owns the G4 name, thus the skip.

That was quick Steve! I'd actually suggested this in an earlier post:

but as you can see not too many people were convinced!
Now if only Canon would release some sort of official statement

Mark -
As soon as I sent that, I had a nagging doubt that it wasn't really the answer. I suppose it could be something as mundane as a corresponding number for the image sensor size. At least it's not the Canon G*ist or something...

Now calling it the Canon G*ist would surely be complete madness!
I think your megapixel idea is the best explanation yet...

Agreed, it's highly likely that Canon wanted to have the model number linked to the sensor size. I also read somewhere that they might of gone this route because of "4" being a bad luck number in a number of Asian cultures.

In Japanese characters(kanji) numeral 4 also represents death/bad thing and hence is avioded in most of the version numbers of products
