Canon Japan has announced that there is a shortage of Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens due to higher-than-expected demand. Announced at the beginning of this year, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM features enhanced optical performance thanks to a fluorite element and a fifth UD element. Other noticeable improvements include faster auto-focus, a wider focusing ring, and sleeker design by reducing the thickness of any protruding elements such as the switch panel. Despite the shortage announced today, the lens appears to be in stock at a number of online retailers.

This isn't a new tactic- one of the more high-profile examples of recent years was when Sony claimed a massive PS3 shortage when the initial launch flopped, and they were stacked in huge piles in stores across the USA.

However, it is dishonest and cheesy as hell. Canon marketing are the worst thing about Canon- the engineering is frequently excellent.

I can't see what all the fuss is about. My 70-200 f2.8 IS L Mark I is totally fit for purpose anyway. I'll be spending my money on something else! Made by Canon, of course! <wink>

I am now a Nikon user and think their version of this lens is expensive. but at least the Nikon did need an update for full frame use,but i was always very happy when i had the canon 70 200 2.8 is lens on full frame & cannot think of anything bad to say about it .Is this a good excuse for canon to up their prices again?
