Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS Review
The new Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS (also known as the PowerShot SD990 IS in North America) is currently the highest-resolution Canon compact camera, offering a massive 14.7 megapixels. Even more attractive to all keen photographers is the addition of a manual Mode that allows control of shutter speed and aperture, making the Canon 980 IS the first ever IXUS to allow true creative control. There’s also a new QuickShot mode that uses the optical viewfinder for framing and focusing, virtually eliminating shutter lag. Is the Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS worth the rather steep price-tag of £349.99 / $399.99 / €459.99? Read our 300th (!) product review to find out…

Why on earth don't you simply mention the ISO values under the sample pictures? Is it a game? Do you want us to guess or to save them and to try to find out? In a review I hope to find valuable info and it looks like you are deliberately holding some of it back. Just put yourself into the mind of a reader for a minute. Thanks.

#9 & #10 are ISO 200, #12 is also ISO 200, #14 is ISO 100, #15 is ISO 320, #16 is ISO 800, #17 is ISO 1600, #18 is ISO 800, the rest is ISO 80. The full-resolution sample photos contain all the EXIF, and yes, you are welcome to save them on your hard disk for personal use, including printing. Hope you find the rest of the review valuable too.

I purchased a Canon Ixus 980IS in November 2008. I took it with me when I went hiking in the UK, in Winter. This means, basically in cold and wet conditions. I carried the camera in my backpack in a waterproof bag, or in the pocket of my quality waterproof jacket. After five times of using the camera, it stopped working. I sent it to Canon for repair. They told me the camera was suffering from "corrosion" and I was liable for the £120 repair bill. This camera was six weeks old and had been used five times.
Before buying the Canon, I had been using a Casio Exilim EX-Z1000 which had been used in the same conditions many many times, and is still going strong. The corrosions in the Canon seems to have been caused by condensation - I would avoid this camera if you are going to use it in anything but dry warm conditions.
Otherwise, it's a decent enough camera, but the controls are far from intuitive. I'll be buying a Panasonic DMC-TZ7 to replace it.

I have bough the same camera about a month ago. Beofre this I owened Canon IXIS 430 which I had for 5 long years. I was very disappointed with Canon Ixus 980 up to the point I took it back to the store within a few days after the purchase. The colours were dark (much darker than in real life) and the camera found it difficult to produce high qualiy macro shots. I have tried Canon IXUS 860 - the camera performs much much better - good quality macro images, good colours.Panasonic DMC-TZ15 is also a good camera - just a bit bulkier and more expensive than Canon IXUS 860 (which now is an older version - but I got it for 449 NZ dollars + 3 year warrenty for free).
