Canon G9 Review at CNET
CNET have reviewed the Canon G9, a 12.1 megapixel update of the G7 compact camera, with a 6x zoom lens, 3 inch LCD screen and the return of RAW mode.
“And though we all welcome back raw-format support, I was a bit put out by the raw+JPEG implementation. The camera doesn’t store a separate JPEG on the card: it gets extracted from the raw file during the download process using Canon’s image downloader utility. So it’s not really raw+JPEG shooting, and it’s close to useless.”

Oops!
Our G9 does, in fact, produce a pair of files, one raw, one jpg in 'raw+jpg' mode, just like Canons have always done.
If you use the USB connection to download the files, yeah, it looks like two raw files. Canon says you have to use their software to download them. Why, Canon??
But stick the SD card in a reader, and there they are, a normal raw and jpg pair.
We'd hate to scare off potential G9 users with a minor quirk like this.
Now, why did they block the card access door when the camera is on a tripod? I hate that.

the Canon G9 is in no way an upgrade
from the previous G7.
it's a veritable face-saving exercise on the part of this company who thought that RAW format was of no importance to G-series shooters who could have had this standard feature easily included on the G7 . for all their obvious faux pas , Canon is again doing its best to sucker us all in with its hardrive-busting 12.1 megapixel G9 . what the G-series really needs is radical image sensor development , the re-installation of its former articulating LCD screen , and a real, not an imaginary camera grip able to assist in the added strain imposed by extension lenses together with external flash units.

Sensor • 1/1.7" Type CCD
that's the only improvement from G7 I'd like to see

Does anyone have any idea where to get an instruction manual for this camera. My husband, who owns the camera, has asked me to get him the instruction manual for Christmas, rather than printing off the on-line one. Any ideas would be most helpful.
