Canon PowerShot A610 Review at Imaging Resource

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | December 19, 2005 | 1 Comments

Canon PowerShot A610Imaging Resource have reviewed the new 5 megapixel Canon PowerShot A610 digital camera.

“The PowerShot A610 sits at the top of Canon’s A-series—a lineup distinguished by cameras that are fairly compact, relatively inexpensive and equipped with a robust set of exposure controls. The A610 is no exception: priced under $300, it has a 5.0-megapixel CCD—ideal for photographers who like especially large prints or who frequently crop their photos. With exposure controls that range from full-automatic, snap-shot simplicity to full-manual creativity, the A610 is a good choice for a family with widely differing photography skills. Given its low price and breadth of features, it should also be attractive to budding shooters on tight budgets who want to advance their photographic skills.”

I was looking for a camera that had AA batteries, manual capabilities, a good macro feature, and could record sound in the movie mode. I did quite a bit of reviewing reviews on various cameras, and it came down to the Canon A610. For the price, it had the best reviews. I must say it takes excellent shots, and the quality of the images and developed photos are amazing. Even after blowing up some of the images on the editor, the clarity is something else.

Based on the reviews I had read, I was expecting some things not to be perfect though. Some reviews stated the camera did not do well in low light. Wrong - In manual mode, you can take a picture of a candle in the night with this camera. Other reviews stated that it does not take instant photos and the delay is too great when you snap for an action picture. Not really, when shooting with the "red eye" off or without the flash, the delay is not even noticeable, and if you hold the click button down partially to set the focus, the snap is as instant as you click for a shot. Other reviews stated you could not use the zoom while recording a movie clip. This is not exactly true. The digital zoom works in the standard shooting mode. Some reviews stated that it did not have a live histogram, true it does not, but you can push the click button down part way, you get the F stop reading before shooting. And the Macro is as advertised. It is exceptional clear in any light at the specified ranges.

I had compared this camera with other cameras in the $200 to $500 price range at local retail stores, and found that the A610 showed clearer images and focusing on the LCD screen. It seems easy to use and handle.

I bought this camera online for $240 which included free shipping. I got a 512 MB SD memory card on sale for $30, a case for $9, and set of rechargeable batteries for $8. I had this camera already for 3 weeks and used it pretty much. We made Christmas cards with it, recorded our piano music with it, shot photos of our animals, and captured our first 10" snow storm this winter. I would not return this camera if given the chance.
