Canon PowerShot A610 Review at LetsGoDigital

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | March 8, 2006 | 4 Comments

Canon PowerShot A610DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the new 5 megapixel Canon PowerShot A610 digital camera.

“The Canon A610 also guarantees quality. Every single image was excellently exposed with rich detail. Colour reproduction is strongly saturated but still shows a natural shade. Auto white balance does a good job generally with the exception of the exuberantly present light balance. The optical quality is fine and there’s no need for any comments. The signal noise ratio of the A610 is fine and doesn’t hold any negative surprises. The images are really appealing. The same goes for the operation of the camera. Well thought-out and straightforward with of course the luxury of a tilting LCD monitor.”

If you are willing to ignore aesthetics of this camera then this is THE best camera in the price range. While buying a camera one must look for the CCD size (higher the better) and Optical Zoom (higher the better). Canon gives 1/1.8" CCD size for this camera and all other 5 Mega Pixel Camera (even Canon's own SD400, S500, SD450) use 1/2.5" CCD. Infact Canon uses the same size CCD (i.e. 1/1.8") for its new 7 Mega Pixel Cameras.

This is the second Canon digital Camera I bought for my family. The earlier one S500 is working perfectly for last one and half years and I expect this one will set new standards.

I do not believe Canon's claim that the A610 is a 5 megapixel, 1/1.8"
CCD camera. I think it has the same 7 megapixel, 1/1.8" CCD as the
A620, but with the 7 megapixel setting disabled. I am certainly willing
to listen if you care to prove me wrong.

O_G, thanks for the info. After reading it, and researching further, we
can definitely conclude the A620 uses the ICX489AQF CCD; however,
whether Canon went back to the ICX455AQF (an early 2003 CCD) for
their A610 (a late 2005 camera model), or stayed with the ICX489AQF
(a late 2004 CCD), still remains to be seen.

One thing I gathered from the research. If the A610 is using the older
ICX455AQF CCD, it should have MUCH better noise performance than
the A620, which does not appear to be the case.
