Canon PowerShot G6 Spotted in the Wild…
It looks like the French shopping website Fnac.com may have inadvertently spilt the beans on the much-rumoured but as yet unseen Canon Powershot G6. It looks like a 7 megapixel version of the G5 to me, albeit with a slightly redesigned silver body. Fnac.com has a larger picture of the camera and the following specs are listed:
- 7.1 megapixel camera
- 3x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 35-140 mm on a 35mm camera
- Aperture range f/2.0-3.0
- Maximum file size of 3072 x 2304 pixels
- Supports JPEG, RAW, AVI formats
- 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 video
- CompactFlash Type I / II memory cards
- USB Interace
- 104 x 70 x 72 mm dimensions
- Weighs 375 grams
- PictBridge support
- Advertised price of 899,00 Euros
The following URL is working at the moment, but bear in mind that Fnac.com may well take it down once you all start visiting it!
UPDATE: Somewhat predictably the Fnac.com webpage for the G6 has now been taken offline…

Just a remark: 35-140mm is a 4x optical zoom lens, as in the G5...

I could be true, since the webmaster from a known digital camera site didn't confirmed or dennied it, but said to me it seemed somewhat familiar though...

If that's the same Sony 1/1.8 sensor I will be dissapointed in Canon. No one needs that much noise in their images.

Just wondering, wouldn't increasing the pixel count in the same size sensor increase visible artifacts? For example, the G5 is already criticized for purple fringing .... ?

for that price of $899 you can get a better camera (Canon Pro1 for $780, Olympus 8080 for $740 or Sony f-828 for $830)

Anybody hear something about new Canon's DSLR camera?
It is rumoured that it'll be EOS 3D...

Everybody keeps repeating the error that FNAC made in the first place ...
... a 35-140 lens is a 4x zoom, and not a 3x zoom...
Best regards,
Andy

Olegan, the quoted price on Fnac.com is 899 Euros, not $, although converting the price from Euros to $ today does make it more exepensive ($1,000+). I can't really see Canon making the G6 more expensive than the top-of-the-range Pro1 though...

Isn't 35-140 equivalent on the leaked G6 more like 4x rather than 3x...?

From the specs and photo, I can see it's using the same lens. But the LCD is like 2 inches... If it's about the same price as a G5 in 3 months ago (May 2005), I think people should buy G5 now instead. Or... get a Digital Rebel. I think they should stop making G-series Camera until Canon puts something new such as IS system.

Steve has a first-look review of it on his site at this URL:

It really looks like a smaller, silver G5. I didn't think they'd be releasing a G6 at all; I thought the Pro1 was taking over the "G" line.
