As ever the rumour mill is working at full speed just ahead of PMA 2004, with Canon the latest manufacturer to be in the spotlight, and the DPReview forums to be source of the rumours. Apparently 3 new models in the form of the Canon Powershot Pro1, S1 and S3 have been spotted in the German photography magazine “ColorFoto”, with the Pro 1 being an 8-megapixel model. Interesting. Canon and Minolta bringing out the very same camera. I wonder who will do the better job of it.

It looks as though the 8-megapixel end of the market is really hotting up. Lets just hope that the image quality is better than the Sony DSC-F828...

Canon has announced it's new pro camera, the 1Dmk2, but has not announced it's new consumer range models yet. No doubt all will be revealed next week. 8 Megapixel prosumer models seem to be the flavour of the month. It will be interesting to see how they all compare, particularly on image quality.

It will also be interesting to see if Canon has anything up it's sleeve in the 300D/10D area. A revamped 10D perhaps? More pixels? Or will this be later in the year. Canon surprised everyone with the 300D launch, and with the 1Dmk2 specs, and could do so again with the 10D.
The 10D sensor is old (2 years+) so Canon must have a replacement in the pipeline. Probably more pixels (8M), but possibly on the same sensor size to keep the production cost down. With improving technology, Canon can probably squeeze more pixels onto the sensor without adversely effecting image quality. Pure speculation though....roll on next week.
Also, I wonder whether we are over concerned about sensor noise. Although it looks a bit ugly on the screen, it is usually undetectable in a print. I think reviewers spend too much time looking at pixels at 100% or 200% on computer monitors, rather than judging a final print.
Generally people do one of two things with a digital file, print it, or shrink it for email/web use. A bit of noise probably doesn't hurt either. My 2 cents.

Check out this picture of the Powershot Pro1
NB. The RED line around the lens. 'L' glass in the compact camera with 8 Mpx. If it had IS as well...

If the this doesn't use the Sony CCD, and is Canon CMOS technology - then this will be a really good camera.

Looks like an intriguing design, although I'm not too sure about the posiitioning of the exposure dial at that awkward angle. Still, that will just be nit-picking if that lens is 'L' series!
