Canon PowerShot SD900 Review at CNET

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | October 6, 2006 | 1 Comments

Canon SD900CNET have published the first online review of the new 10 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD900 (also known as the Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti).

“A solid, handy, compact camera, the Canon PowerShot SD900 nevertheless lacks some useful features offered by the similarly priced SD800 IS. Unless you absolutely need the extra pixels—for, say, cropping tightly on a portion of a photo or printing to larger than 8x10—you’re probably better off with the faster, stabilized SD800 IS.”

I agree with the conclusion: the SD800 IS is a better choice.

However, the suggestion that the SD800 IS is not good enough for larger than 8x10 is ludicrous. I've made reasonable 12x18 prints with just 4 megapixels (recorded; then carefully upres'ed in Photoshop), and very nice ones with 6 megapixels.

In fact, I'm not sure that the lens of these subcompacts can take advantage of the additional recording capacity in an observable way (without resorting to a deconvolution tool like DxO Pro; and I'm not aware of such a product for subcompacts).
