The Canon Powershot SX130 IS is the replacement for the SX120 IS, featuring a 12.1-megapixel sensor, 12x optical zoom with optical image stabilisation, and 720p HD video with stereo sound. Spanning a 35mm equivalent focal range of 28-336mm, the new zoom lens has Canon’s integrated optical Image Stabiliser on board for a claimed 3-stop advantage when shooting had held. You can even use the zoom in video mode thanks to a quiet zoom motor. For confident photographers who want more input into how they capture their images, full manual control allows them to individually control shutter speed and aperture to shoot with their chosen settings and create their own effects. Compatible with the new SDXC memory cards, the Canon Powershot SX130 IS is available from late August 2010, priced at £199.00/€229.00/$249.99.

Canon Press Release

Canon announces the PowerShot SX130 IS – premium performance, family-friendly value

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 19th August 2010 – Canon today announces the PowerShot SX130 IS, its latest super zoom digital compact camera to combine impressive imaging technology with family-friendly flexibility and value. Replacing the popular PowerShot SX120 IS, this new model offers a host of intelligent features to make it easier to capture important moments in both high-quality still images and High Definition movies.

With its compact design, intuitive controls and long zoom lens, this is the perfect camera for those who want an easy-to-use, take-anywhere digital camera. Users are able to shoot amazing still images and video in any situation - from family gatherings, to landscapes, to close-up shots of distant subjects.

Canon performance, amazing value
Featuring a 12.1 Megapixel sensor for large, detailed prints, and DIGIC 4 image processing, the PowerShot SX130 IS allows all the family to record special moments in outstanding quality. The 12x optical zoom ranges from wide angle (28mm) to telephoto (336mm), making the camera equally ideal for wide-angle group shots and taking on sightseeing trips.

Canon’s integrated optical Image Stabilizer offers a three-stop advantage, making it easier to take great shots in low light with long exposures, and reducing the blur associated with camera-shake when shooting distant subjects at the telephoto end of the zoom.

The large, 7.5cm (3.0”) LCD screen, with a 230k dot resolution and optional on-screen Hints & Tips makes it easy to navigate the enhanced menu system and to compose the perfect shot. A wide viewing angle also enables shooting from awkward angles, as well as sharing the results with groups of friends immediately after the picture is taken.

Capture the moment in HD
The PowerShot SX130 IS supports 720p HD video with stereo sound, allowing users to immediately switch from photos to high-quality video and back again with one convenient, compact camera. A quiet zoom motor allows the full lens focal range to be exploited whilst recording, and continuous autofocus ensures that moving subjects are sharp – providing the perfect tool for capturing school events, parties and family gatherings where it may be difficult to follow all of the action.

This model supports the new SDXC memory cards, enabling up to 2TB of video and full-resolution stills to be stored without needing to change card.

Easy to use for all the family
Any member of the family can achieve great results thanks to a range of intelligent shooting features and creative modes. With Easy Mode, the camera becomes the perfect point-and-shoot, with most buttons disabled and icons removed from the screen to make it easier to compose and capture the best possible shot, without worrying about settings.

Smart Auto with Scene Detection Technology identifies up to 28 different shooting conditions, automatically adjusting the settings to produce the best possible result. Smart Flash Exposure controls flash levels according to shooting conditions, providing the right amount of flash to ensure perfectly exposed shots in all situations, from dimly lit rooms to bright sunlight.

Additional powerful features help to capture split-second moments with ease. Servo AF and AE automatically adjusts focus and exposure when tracking a moving subject, while Smart Shutter with Face Detection technology ensure great group photos, controlling the shutter with a wink, a smile or after a new face enters the frame. Blink detection also warns the user when one of the subjects has their eyes closed, allowing a better image to be shot.

For confident photographers who want more input into how they capture their images, full manual control allows them to individually control shutter speed and aperture to shoot with their chosen settings and create their own effects.

As well as providing help in capturing great images as seen through the lens, the PowerShot SX130 IS also features a range of creative modes to add a new dimension to photos without requiring additional post-production. Miniature Effect is available in both movie and still image capture, mimicking the effects of a tilt-shift lens to give subjects a model-like profile. Fish-eye Effect replicates the distortion of a fish-eye lens, adding a new angle to portrait and landscape shots. Super Vivid boosts colour saturation, while Poster Effect creates a more retro feel to images, allowing users to make their photos really stand out from the crowd.

Share stories with CANON iMAGE GATEWAY
Owners of this new model can join the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, an online facility for sharing photos and video. Up to 2GB of personal storage capacity is available, creating enough room for hundreds of high-quality images. Mobile browsing is also supported, making it easy for friends and family to view photos on the move.

Where can I buy this exact camera? Silverish/gold exterior versus black?

Apart video recording at 720p and SDXC support (useless for me since 16GB are nearly impossible to fill) i don't think this camera is really better than its predecessor sx120. Although this camera features a 12x zoom the focal range is decreased (336 vs 360 mm) but on the other side it has real wide angle (28 vs 36). And they have decreased the aperture in this model (3.4-5.6 vs 2.8-4.3) that makes a difference in low light environments. I think it's better to wait for the next model.
Sorry for my poor english smile

"..focal range is decreased (336 vs 360 mm)"
I mean at telephoto zoom the focal lenght is decreased, not focal range. Ops!11

My computer can't download the CD software that this camera came with; does anyone have link that I can go online and do it? I've tried looking but can't find one. The CD is "Canon digital camera solution disk" version 68.0 Thanks!

Is anyone having trouble downloading or transferring videos from their camera to their computer? Whenever I try to transfer or copy the video to my computer, the video doesn't play because the size of the video is stating that it is 0 bytes. It's as if the video didn't transfer at all. Does anyone know how to transfer/download videos from this camera to their PC? I have the CD that came with the camera but it is just allowing me the option to upload the video to you tube.

Yes, Dionne, I am having that problem with another Canon product right now. I've already lost video content because the copy completed, I deleted the videos from the card, only to find that the copies are 0 bytes and unplayable.

I have downloaded and played other content from the camera, but it seems that anything large (1 GB or more?) will not work. Any thoughts out there would be helpful. Thanks!

Yes I have the same issue - a clip of 5 minutes
(0.97 GB) can't be copied to my computer. My
old powershot A610 has the same problem - large
video won't be copied. That's really frustrating!

Hey guys, the issue is resolved! I called Canon support today complaining about this (can't copy from camera; can't copy from a card-reader, either) and the support told me to install the MyCamera utility in the included CD. That utility pops up when the camera get connected to the computer and can copy all (or selected) images/videos from the camera (no card-reader needed). I was also told that the prerequisite for Windows XP (my case) is SP3 and MS .NET framework version 3.0 (or up).

With that gone I've a new issue - the videos tend to blur once in a while before becoming sharp again. I guess that's because of the auto-focus feature (SX130 allows you to zoom in and zoom out during video shooting) as it's forever searching for the best focus. But the result is a bit annoying, of course. Anybody experience the same issue? Any solutions?

I have the same focusing issue. It seems to happen for mine even after making sure I wasn't zooming, the subject wasn't changing, and I wasn't moving the camera. Based on this, I think mine's defective---I mean, it shouldn't be trying to change the focus if nothing else has changed!

Other than that, this camera has been excellent for me. I haven't bothered to touch the CD yet, because I never saw much need for them.

Richard, my camera is the same - refocusing constantly even without zoom and the both the subject and the camera are not moving (some may argue that a talking head as a subject is moving). I believe this is a general issue.

Beyond the refocus issue I am noticing the video and visual are not quite synced. Am wondering if it is defective camera and I should switch it out or if all the cameras are doing this. Other than that really like the photographs.

Amber, if you mean the audio/video go out of sync then you should update your firmware. Go to Canon web site to download the new firmware (version 1.0.1) for SX130 as well as the instruction on how to put it to your camera. I had done that to my own after purchase.

Wayne,

Thanks so much. I updated the firmware version on to my camera and it remedied the problem on the camera.

As for viewing, Picasa was still not syncing the video and audio but it was fine in Windows Media.

Spent ages looking for a easy to use smart camera above a compact which are too light and too small...
Eventually discovered this one. I immediately loved the weight and size which means I know I have it!
It has many similar features to my husband's Panasonic digital SLR with added video...took it out last weekend and it was a gem.
Love the subtle slick click when turning it on.
It focuses well and the large LCD screen is a bonus for panoramic scenes... encouraging more thoughtful images.
It takes AA batteries too, so I can always take spares which was a must. I use Eneloop re-chargeable batteries because I used to have a Samsung S30 which ate up battery life in the space of one hour....but Eneloop come ready charged and last so much longer...they are dearer but worth it in the long run.
This Canon has already passed the battery test and I am so happy!
I believe the camera is being updated soon as Curry's had it advertised at a much reduced price and no stock left but Argos had some.
