Canon have revealed the Canon Speedlite 270EX flashgun, the successor to the Speedlite 220EX. The Japanese giant timed this announcement to coincide with that of the Canon EOS 500D digital SLR, marketed as the Canon EOS Rebel T1i in North America. The Canon Speedlite 270EX is a compact and lightweight external flash unit intended for use with Canon EOS SLRs and select PowerShot models. The guide number is 27 in metres, though the ISO speed at which this number is valid is not specified. The flash is claimed to recharge almost as quickly as its predecessor despite being powered by just two AA batteries, and enables bounce shooting in four positions between 0 and 90 degrees. A zooming head, a quick-lock mechanism and a metal mounting foot complete the picture.

The recommended retail price of the Canon Speedlite 270EX is £149.99 / €169.99 including VAT. Availability is forecast for early May.

Canon UK Press Release

Canon refreshes Flash range with the compact Speedlite 270EX

United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland, 25 March, 2009: Canon announces the launch of the entry level Speedlite 270EX, an enhanced flash designed for EOS and PowerShot users. Replacing the popular Speedlite 220EX, the Speedlite 270EX is aimed at photographers wanting to expand their flash photography beyond the built in flash and those who want a small: pocketable flash unit to complement their EOS-1D or EOS 5D series. The compact Speedlite 270EX builds on the success of its predecessor, with more power than usual for its class and size.

The Speedlite 270EX includes a host of new features not available with a built-in flash that push the boundaries for the entry level flash market. These include the addition of a zoom head, ensuring efficient light distribution and bounce flash head, enabling light from the flash to bounce off a ceiling to produce pictures with more flattering lighting with softer tones and depth. Improved circuitry offers near silent recharging and enables similar recharging times as its predecessor, despite being powered by just 2 AA batteries.

Pricing and availability:

The Speedlite 270EX is available from early May 2009 priced at £149.99 / €169.99 RRP inc. VAT.

Key Features include:

  * High power flash with a maximum guide number 27 m
  * Fast, silent recycle times
  * Manual flash output (settable via camera menus)
  * Speedlite controllable with compatible camera’s menu
  * Zoom head
  * Bounce flash head

I bought this flash from Amazon for USD 150 and thus far am completely unimpressed: it's weak... very weak. Taking photos of people five or six feet away at ISO 400 and f-stop of 4 and I'm still getting shutter speeds of 1/10th of a second. WEAK.

I'm returning it tomorrow. The built-in flash on my Digital Rebel XT is only slightly weaker than this external flash. Pitiful.

Gob, if you're getting a shutter speed of 1/10th of a second, that probably has nothing to do with the flash. The pulse from the flash is near-instantaneous, so the shutter speed doesn't make any difference to the flash exposure.

If you're using the camera on Tv or Av mode, the camera will set exposure assuming there is no flash, and then use the flash to brighten any dark patches. This will usually give relatively long exposures when shooting in low light.

Try using the camera on P mode or M mode. In P mode, the camera will use the flash to light the scene. In M mode, if you set the shutter speed to the X-sync speed (should be 1/200 on the XT), then the scene will dark, and the main source of light will be the flash.

The 270EX should be quite capable of shooting under the conditions you describe. If shooting in P or M mode doesn't give you adequate results, you probably have a faulty unit, which you should return.

Thanks for the comment - wish I still had the flash available to check it out. I did return it to Amazon. Now I know for next time.
