Casio Announces 3.2 Megapixel A5406C Camera Phone

Mark Goldstein | Camera Phones | May 20, 2004 | 7 Comments

Casio A5406CUp to now I’ve resisted blogging about camera phones - they’re just low-megapixel, non-zoom, low-quality toys, right? Well, Casio’s latest camera phone, the A5406CA, is set to change all of that, as it offers 3.2 megapixels and up to 60 minutes of video!

On a more general note, do you think that PhotographyBLOG should cover camera phones? Are they the digital cameras of the future? How many of you own one?

Mark,

I would suggest that you only cover camera phones if something special crops up - this Casio news, for example. There are plenty of specialist phone sites around already. When camera phones provide quality to rival dedicated digital cameras, maybe they will be more relevant - but IMHO they'll always be a poor second cousin.

I currently have a camera phone (LG U8110), but it's absolutely no use for anything approaching "serious" photography.

On a related note, I hear that Casio's current 2Mp camera phone has been slated for having abysmal picture quality - and I have no doubt that this 3.2Mp model will be any different.

Cheers,
Jon

Skip the camera phones and PDAs with build in cameras, they are for taking snapshots. I would hate to start scolling pass the new announcements about cameras phones or anything related to them on this website if you made it part of the daily news, you post here. If it became to much I would stop visiting your website everyday. :(

I do not own a camera phone and my PDA does not have one. Are cameras phones are the future? Yes to replace the cheap throw away film based drugstore camera and to take snapshots. But I am amazed each year by the number of people that are using a camera phones for taking their vacation photos. Oops! I mean vacation snapshots!

Mark,

1. love the site, I visit daily

2. Given the article you posted recently about Camera Phones taking over the consumer marketplace, they do have a place. But I think that you should cover them only if they produce something of note in a photographic sense only. The 3MP Casio would be an example of what is important.

The level you're currently covering these phone/camera combos is just right for me- keep it up.

I own a Treo 600, and was/am pretty dissapointed with the quality of the pics it takes- on the flip side, I always have it with me, which means I can capture images that I wouldn't have otherwise- that's better than nothing!

People keep dissing the low quality images these phone/camera combos take- but y'all got to remember this is bleeding edge stuff here. Every step towards improvement (such as more pixels in this case) is a step in the right direction and we should be applauding the efforts these manufacturers are making.

Camera phones are a good idea as an "Emergency" use camera. I don't carry a camera with me all the time, but I do carry a celular phone with me all the time. I have been in many situations in which I needed to take an emergency photo and I did not had a camera with me. Due to this I had lost a lot of money in for example, unfair parking tickets. I am going to buy one as soon as there is one available for T-Mobile.

Mark,

I think camera phones will be used as a way to photographically blog people's lives but not as a serious photographic tool (except in certain creative endeavors). The issues we see creeping into the latest generation of 8Mpix digicams are nothing compared with the issues of getting good quality pictures from a phone. I have a camera phone and really the main use is for cute pictures and a little bit of fun. For what it is worth, the previous generation of the Casio phone (the 2MPix version) had reportedly abyssmal photo quality even for a camera phone. I say don't "cover them" but mention the standouts.

Regards,
