Casio has released the Casio Exilim EX-FH100, billed as the world’s first high-speed, high-zoom digital compact camera. The pocketable Casio EX-FH100 packs a ten-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, a 24-240mm equivalent zoom lens and high-speed burst shooting of 40 shots per second in a compact body measuring just 105mm wide x 63.2mm tall x 29.9mm thick. Additionally, the EX-FH100 can record high-speed movies at 1,000fps, 420fps, 240fps, or 120fps. Also it features a Prerecord Continuous Shutter setting which allows users to start shooting when the shutter button is only depressed halfway, meaning the user will not miss those critical moments even if they press the shutter a little late. The Casio EX-FH100 has a number of Best Shot modes including High-speed Night Scene and Portrait, which combines several images using highly sensitive high-speed burst shooting into a single, clear image; High-speed Lighting, which is basically an in-camera HDR function; and High-Speed Burst Shooting BEST SHOT, which optimises the burst shooting simply by selecting the type of scene to be photographed. Equipped with an HDMI port and stereo microphone, the EX-FH100 will retail with an RRP of £279.

CASIO RELEASES THE HIGH SPEED EXILIM EX-FH100

THE WORLD’S FIRST HIGH SPEED, HIGH ZOOM COMPACT CAMERA

6 January 2010 - Casio Computer Co., Ltd announced today the release of the EX-FH100. The 10.1 effective megapixel high speed digital camera boasts a wide-angle 24mm 10x optical zoom lens and high-speed burst shooting of 40 shots per second in a compact body.

SPECIFICATION

Wide-angle 24 mm 10X optical zoom lens
The EX-FH100 features a high-power zoom lens in a compact body measuring just 105mm wide x 63.2mm tall x 29.9mm thick*1 The lens delivers all the freedom of zoom photography - from a wide-angle 24mm to a 10X optical zoom that brings distant subjects right up close.

Ultra-high speed burst shooting
The EX-FH100 can take up to 30 shots of 9.0 megapixel high-resolution images with high-speed burst shooting at a maximum speed of 40 shots per second. It features a Prerecord Continuous Shutter setting which allows users to start shooting when the shutter button is only depressed halfway, meaning the user will not miss those critical moments even if they press the shutter a little late.

High-speed movie recording at up to 1,000 fps
The EX-FH100 can record high-speed movies at 1,000 fps, 420 fps, 240 fps, or 120 fps. The camera also boasts a function that allows users switch to high-speed recording at 240 fps or 120 fps by pressing a single button during normal movie recording (30 fps). The high-speed recording function also allows users to enjoy dramatic ultra slow-motion playback.*2

Highly sensitive CMOS sensor
Casio continues the quest for ever-higher picture quality and the EX-FH100 incorporates a back-illuminated CMOS sensor that boasts nearly twice the usual sensitivity. This allows users to take beautiful photos outside as well as high-quality, low-noise photos indoors or in poor light conditions. The camera also comes with CMOS-shift image stabilisation.

BEST SHOT® modes

  * High-speed Night Scene and Portrait With a single press of the shutter button the camera internally combines several images using highly sensitive high-speed burst shooting into a single crystal-clear image, helping eliminate photo blur.
  * High-speed Lighting The EX-FH100 takes three images using high-speed burst shooting, adjusting the exposure for normal (standard), bright, and dim subjects respectively, with a single press of the shutter button. These images are then combined into a single image, helping to avoid bad photos with washed out or overly dark areas when the scene is strongly backlit.
  * High-Speed Burst Shooting BEST SHOT / High-Speed Movie BEST SHOT The EX-FH100 also has “High-Speed Burst Shooting BEST SHOT” and “High-Speed Movie BEST SHOT” modes that optimise the burst shooting or high-speed movie settings simply by selecting the type of scene to be photographed, such as a child, pet, or sports scene, at the critical moment or in slow motion.

High-resolution HD Movie function
The EX-FH100 features an HD Movie function. With a dedicated Movie button that records at 1280x720 pixels. The camera is equipped with an HDMI™ terminal and stereo microphone, which enable users to enjoy a beautiful picture and realistic sound when connecting the camera to a large display TV.

The EX-FH100 will retail with an RRP of £279*3 and can be purchased from all good camera stockists and http://www.casioonline.co.uk.

*1. In accordance with Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards.
*2. E.g. one second of actual movie recorded at a speed of 420 fps can be played back over 14 seconds at 30 fps.
*3. As of 1 January 2010

This is a very interesting camera. It certainly could go head to head and then some against the TZ7. It appears to me that the two microphones are widely spaced on the top of this camera. That could be very advantageous in giving a wide stereophonic image on the stereo sound track that this camera would record.

Besides seeing actual pictures taken with it to ascertain the alleged improved quality, I'd like to know something that I've been unable to see commented in any preview anywhere, namely:

Can it zoom and/or autofocus while recording video at maximum quality ? Because if it can't then that would be deal breaker for me.

I just realized one problem with this unit. The left stereo microphone is in a place where I generally hold a camera with my left index finger thus my index finger would cover that microphone. I would not have that problem with the DS3.

I read from another user of this camera that it does not allow zoom during video shooting. What I wonder is, does it have image stabilization running when shooting video?
