City and Guilds Photography - Black and White Project
I’m currently studying for the City and Guilds Photography (6923) Year 1 qualification at my local college (West Herts). One of the modules in the course is “Introduction to Black and White Photography”, with a choice of 2 assignments. I’ve chosen “People in the Environment” and have narrowed this very broad topic down to “Street Entertainers”, primarily because I don’t live too far from Covent Garden in London.
I haven’t shot much black and white before, and I’d never set foot in a darkroom prior to this course, so let’s just say that the learning curve is pretty steep. Especially in the darkroom, where I’m wasting reams of photographic paper and trying my patience to the limit.
Anyway, I wanted to share the best of my initial efforts with you, so here are 3 images from my first 2 rolls of film…

Mark, I'm interested in this course, I will probably start it in September. Is it good? is it hard work?
Only one other thing, I can't see the images or how to get to them.
Nice site by the way!

Hi Colin!
The City & Guilds course is worth doing if your photography knowledge has some gaps (like mine). The course is pretty thorough, although it does assume a basic level of competency to start with.
We've tended to concentrate so far on black and white in the darkroom, as this is the module that you have to create proper prints for and therefore can't really do at home. You have to do 10 b&w prints.
The other 2 modules are colour prints (again 10 prints per module), so you're largely left to get on with those in your own time.
There is quite a lot more work involved than I anticipated. As well as the 3 modules, there are 2 essays and a multiple choice exam to complete.
Overall it's definitely worth doing and is amazingly good value for money - only £180 for the course, which runs from September to June, with a 3 hour lesson each week and darkroom access!
As for the images, can you see the thumbnails? You should be able to click on them to open them. Which web browser are you using?
Thanks,
Mark

This just gets more and more strange! I have just accessed the site from a different PC. I can see the thumbnails no problem at all and after logging in I am able to post replies without having to fill the user information in again.
Wel,, you have certainly convinced me - I am going to sign up for the asap! I am not a novice at photography, but definitely a beginner, with absolutely no darkroom experience. Although I don't have the room for a darkroom at home, It will be interesting to know about, and I am sure, affect the way I approach a subject I want to shoot.
I'm going to go looking round more of the site now I know I can get into it from work!
Have a good day!

Hi Colin,

I see what you mean - I had to fill in the user information the first time, but then it's all filled out now! Even I didn't realise that it worked quite like that...I think ticking Remember Me automatically fills in your info.
I've tweaked the image code slightly so that the photos should display OK. You should be able to see everything on ths site now
Where are you going to do the City and Guilds course?

Thanks Sue
They were quite well received at my class on Thursday evening, and I managed to get some good darkroom prints from them.
