Giraffes - 18 July, 9.30pm, Mile End Park

“A London premiere from international theatre ensemble Compagnie Off brings Giraffes to the heart of the East End. A night-time procession of life-sized giraffe puppets will cross Mile End Park, including the famous Green Bridge, accompanied by music and pyrotechnics.”

Question: How do you successfully photograph a herd of human-powered Giraffes that move at jogging pace in the near-dark and are lit up by spotlights and the occasional flare? When the vast crowds of onlookers rule out the use of a tripod? And when I haven’t got round to buying an external flash and have to use the pop-up one instead?

Answer: After trying for about 2 hours, I still don’t really know, but it was fun trying…

Very good photos. I like #3 the best, while not as sharp as the #1, ok it not sharp. The angle and the blur actually makes the photo more interesting than #1. #5 looks like a riot in the background.

Handholding a 70-200mm lens in near-darkness at shutter-speeds of 1/30th and slower was not really a recipe for pin-sharp images grin I don't think a tripod would have helped either, as the subject was always on the move, requiring high shutter speeds.

Which brings up the question, even if an image isn't sharp, can it still be considered a success? What would you do with these images if they were yours - keep them or bin them? (personally I'm keeping them...)

2, 3, and 6 are the real keepers, if any. The others seem too compromised by movement to me. I really love the colours of the pictures, though.

Ed - How about #1 - that's the sharpest image?!

Yes, the first one is the sharpest, but it seems out of context with the others. Too realistic. The others have a dream-world feeling about them.

Jernej - you have some good photos there - I especially like the Paris ones. I think you should get some proper webspace though grin
