Digital Outback Photo Reviews Sony DSC-F828

Sony DSC-F828Digital Outback Photo is the latest website to publish a review of a full-production version of the highly-anticipated Sony DSC-F828 digital camera.

“The main issue with images from the F828 is actually chromatic aberration (CA). At least with all shots at 200mm and at more contrasty scenes we get a lot CA (the contrast was not even extreme). This CA is also easily visible to the naked eye in prints at 11x14”.”

It seems like sony have put the cat amongst the (canon & nikon) pigeons with this camera.

Looking at the early reviews on the internet it looks like this camera will be a real challenger to the 300D,D70, and other DSLRs.

The 8 Megapixel sensor and the quality lens on this camera appear to produce excellent results, certainly at low ISOs, and comparible to more expensive SLR kit.

The downside to me would be the Electronic ViewFinder. These are not as easy to use as a SLR mirror system. Also the RAW mode seems a bit underpowered, but maybe Sony can fix this with a Firmware update once they realize the negative comments on their 8 bit only, proprietory format, RAW mode.

The 8 Megapixel sensor will be a winner in the marketing wars where more pixels equals 'better' camera.

The good news for all of us is the competition from Sony will continue to drive the price/technology battle between the major manufacturers. I now expect Canon to announce an 8 Megapixel (or more!!!) DSLR sometime in the New Year. Sony have shown that you can get high pixel counts from a small sensor, so with Canon/Nikon/Fuji's larger sensor sizes, they should also be able to cram on more pixels without degrading noise levels significantly.

2004 should be an interesting year for the digital camera world.
