Digital Outback Photo Tests Canon EF 28-135mm IS Lens
Digital Outback Photo have tested the popular Canon EF 28-135mm IS lens in conjunction with the popular Canon EOS 300D digital SLR camera, comparing this combination with the much, much more expensive Canon EOS 1Ds and Canon 70-200mm IS L lens.
“To find the right partner lens for the 300D is not trivial. Many think that the 28-135 IS lens is the right compromise for the best travel lens:
price
size
weight
reasonable optical quality
IS (image stabilization)
The following pictures should illustrate the situation…”

I have found the 28-135mm to be a great outdoor lens. Couple it with the cheapo 50mm 1.8 for indoor shots and you've got a nice combo for traveling light.

Do you use that lens with a film or digital SLR Alex? I've been tempted to buy the 28-135mm, but it turns into a 45mm-216mm on the EOS 10D.
I do have the Mk1 version of the cheap 50mm lens. As you say, it's great for low-light photography with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.8. And it only costs around £70!

I got it to use with my D30 a few years back and still use it all the time with my 10D.

I bet it was a lot cheaper than it is now. The 28-135mm lens is one of the most popular amongst new Canon DSLR owners. Consequently here in the UK the price of a new lens is around £400, with 2nd-hand examples around £300.
