Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200DigitalCameraInfo have posted their first impressions of the 7.2 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 digicam that was first announced at the CES show a week ago.

“The ease of use and comfortable handling make this Cyber-shot model an attractive digital camera for the right type of user. The high megapixel count and larger 2-inch LCD make this camera an even better bargain at $399. The 7.2-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and will be released to the consumer market in February 2005. The compact point-and-shoot has a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3x optical zoom lens that extends from the camera body when powered up. The P200 is easy to use for the style-driven beginner and only gets better with increased photographic knowledge and utilization of manual functions.”

The P200 does have a newer Sony Real Imaging Processor which not only makes the images come out at a higher quality, but also uses up less power making the battery last 20 minutes longer on average. Also, blurring of images which was a slight problem with the P150 (mostly due to people error in low light) has been improved upon greatly by default. (before you had to change the manual setting on the P150 for a fix)

There are quite a few very important differences to the P200 which are improvements to the P150. The main differences are a one push manual (custom) white balance, a spot focus mode, a center-weighted metering mode, and it has lower power consumption than its predecessor, the P150. The lower power consumption (as I said above) is due to the fact that the image processor is newer and more efficient. This is even more amazing since the screen is 2 inches in size 1/10th larger than the P150 so you would think would consume more power. It is also the first LCD screen which I see as being protected by a plastic screen that also improves visibility in daylight. The groove for the index finger is a nice touch that helps you grip the camera better. I definitely would buy this camera over the P150 any day.
