Do Digital Cameras Change People’s Behaviour?

Mark Goldstein | Digital | July 1, 2004 | 2 Comments

The Big Picture? weblog has published a fascinating article that considers the impact of digital cameras on both the photographer and the subject (found via Digital Photography Blog):

“I think digital cameras, phones included, are an extension of our ability to communicate with one another in the world. There are things we say with images than cannot be said with words. Images speak for how we see and feel about our lives.

Not having to wait for pictures to be processed and printed in a lab, only serves to make our experiences more in the moment and sensual in some way.”

Ever the sceptic, I'd say the quote is utter rubbish. Cameras have been getting steadily less formal for the last century- it's nothing new - it's just that now people take images without thinking about it as there's no additional cost. Digital cameras have made people take more pitures, not behave differently. If people do behave differently nowadays then it's nothing to do with digital cameras.

I think I would have to agree with part of what this article says. The cameras don't drastically change us but in some way they can. being able to take a picture without hesitating or being disapointed when it's developped is a great feeling. Taking many pictures makes it so much easier to pick out all the ones you like and put them out. show people what you like and how you see it from a certain angle etc.
just pointing at something doesn't really show people what you like, but if you give them your view they can get a sense and you feel that it's easier to communicate that way.
