DPReview Posts Pentax *ist D Sample Images
DPReview have posted 25 sample images taken with the long-delayed Pentax *ist D digital SLR camera. Here’s what DPReview Editor Phil Askey has to say about the image quality from the *ist D:
“So far the *ist D is looking quite good, there are two sides to the *ist D’s image quality story. Firstly tonal balance and color response are both good, a natural color response and lifted shadow detail with highlight clipping at about the same point as most other digital SLR’s. Noise is also quite low, about the same as the Nikon D100 (which is what we’d expect as they both share the same sensor). The other side is that Pentax has clearly chosen a low sharpening approach, at 100% view most images have a soft look but do sharpen well and can be delivered sharper out of the camera by pushing up in-camera sharpening. Additionally available lenses do mean you’re more likely to be shooting ‘wide open’ and thus have less sharp images as a consequence. Overall the *ist D is looking ‘so far so good’.”

I *will* own this camera the moment it becomes available. Just waiting for my store's Pentax rep to give me the go-ahead to order it. God, I can't wait!!!

So you haven't been put off at all by the *ist D's relatively high price? Have you got a load of Pentax lenses lying around waiting to be used?

Yeah, the primary reason I'm getting it is because I'm already a Pentax shooter, but there's also the fact that it's a hell of a lot smaller and lighter than all the other dSLRs out there. I had a chance to try one out earlier this month when my Pentax rep brought his to the camera shop I work at, and I loved it. Heck, even the cheapo kit lens it came with was good. Speaking of lenses, nothing else comes close to the huge amount of lenses that can potentially be used with the *ist D. As for the price, well, I get the employee discount, so I can't comment there.

That employee discount sounds good!
Pentax's challenge definitely lies in attracting non-Pentax users - people who don't already have a vested interest in the Pentax brand and SLR lens system.

Are you sure that the camera will work with sigma Ex for pentax lenses?

Hi Joaquim,
As far as I know Sigma EX lenses will work with the Pentax *ist D. Sigma do offer a re-chipping service for their older lenses, which is free-of-charge in the UK. You may want to contact Sigma just to check though.

Just bought an old non MLU body. The fitting that one twists to switch from 120 to 220 film is missing. Anyone know where I can either get one or get it repaired? I am in the Sacramento area.
Thanks in advance. Please email any response to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
