Now open for entries, the Environmental Photographer of the Year competition is an international showcase for the very best in environmental photography. Free to enter, the competition provides an opportunity for amateur and professional photographers of all ages to share images of environmental and social issues with international audiences, and to enhance our understanding of the causes, consequences and solutions to climate change and social inequality. The main prize is the prestigious Atkins CIWEM Environmental Photographer of the Year title, along with a cash prize of £3,000. In recognition of the contemporary focus of this year’s competition, photographs must have been taken (and films made) since 1 January 2015. The submission deadline is 18 April 2016.

ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2016 CALL FOR ENTRIES

The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition is once again calling for entries from environmentally conscious photographers and filmmakers of all ages, nationalities and abilities. Our competition offers you the chance to use your photographic and filmmaking talents to promote an understanding of global environmental and social issues. If successful, your work will be featured by major global media and at high profile events around the world. The competition offers prize money of £6,000 and is free to enter.

Launched in 2007 by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), and sponsored by Atkins, one of the world’s leading design, engineering and project management consultancies, the competition provides an international showcase for the very best in environmental photography and video. Atkins and CIWEM aim to inspire a global audience to think differently about contemporary social and environmental issues, including climate change, sustainable development, biodiversity and human rights.

Entries will be judged from the open submission by a distinguished panel of judges, including:

  • Ian Dunn – Chief Operating Officer at the University of Southampton; former Chief Executive of the Galapagos Conservation Trust
  • Dr David Haley - Senior Research Fellow, Director - Ecology In Practice, Route Leader MA Art as Environment, Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Tim Parkin - Landscape photographer and Editor of On Landscape
  • Hayley Skipper - Curator of Arts Development, Forestry Commission England

This year there will be three specific prize themes to focus the entries – the Built Environment; the Changing Climate; and People, Nature and Economy.

The prizes for the 2016 competition are:
• Environmental Photographer of the Year: £3000
• Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (Under 25): £1000
• Environmental Film of the Year: £500
• Atkins Built Environment Award: Photographer in residence for 12 month opportunity capturing Atkins major projects
• CIWEM Changing Climate Award: £500, plus showcase of portfolio in one issue of The Environment Magazine
• Forestry Commission England People, Nature and Economy Award: £1000, plus showcase of portfolio in one of England’s Public Forests

Shortlisted works will be displayed at the Royal Geographical Society, London in June 2016. This will be followed by a tour to forest venues nationally, supported by Forestry Commission England, beginning with Grizedale Forest in Cumbria.

HOW TO ENTER:
Open to all photographers, professional and amateur alike, the competition encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, resonant, original and beautiful. Entry is free and photographers may submit up to 10 works. In recognition of the contemporary focus of this year’s competition, photographs must have been taken (and films made) since 1 January 2015.
