ePhotoZine Reviews Olympus E-1

Mark Goldstein | Digital SLR Cameras | October 9, 2003 | 2 Comments

Olympus E-1ePhotoZine have just published what I think is the World’s first ever full review of a production version of the Olympus E-1 digital SLR camera (someone correct me if I’m wrong…).

“Bold claims have been made by Olympus about the capabilities of the E-1, so many people may be expecting something groundbreaking in terms of results. Instead the E-1 offers good all-round performance which may disappoint those people with high expectations. More rational people will no doubt be pleased by the good resolution, low-image noise, good dynamic range, RAW flexibility, comprehensive quality settings, excellent colour accuracy and the high quality of the Zuiko lenses. There are drawbacks though, the noise levels at the higher end of the range aren’t very competitive compared to other professional Digital SLRs, though they are generally more expensive.”

Will anyone bother buying this? I think Canon has sunk the Olympus DSLR system even before it goes on sale. I am amazed how far ahead Canon is in the DSLR arena, Unless Nikon stuns everyone with a new camera in the near future Canon look set to dominate for the next year or so at least.

There's really only one reason to buy the E-1: the ultra-sharp Digital Zuiko lenses. Personally, I don't think the E-1 body is quite good enough for these lenses, but perhaps a new version somwhere down the road will do better.

As for Nikon, I agree they're falling way behind. My Nikon rep mentioned a sales meeting at the end of this month, so there might be some news then, but my guess is there won't be anything new/groundbreaking till PMA next March.

I almost feel bad for Nikon. *Almost*.
