Epson Announces Perfection 4870 Scanner
Epson UK have announced a new addition to their range of flatbed scanners. The Perfection 4870 has an amazing optical resolution of 4800 x 9600dpi which allows a 35mm piece of film to be enlarged to 60cm x80cm (A1 size). The scanner incorporates DIGITAL ICE Technology, traditionally used in dedicated film scanners, to remove surface defects such as dust and scratches from the scanned image. The Perfection 4870 Photo also has a class-leading optical density of 3.8DMax.
Price has yet to be announced, although the scanner is due to be released on 1st February 2004.

Just got one... It rocks... still figurin’ stuff out though (struggling through the Japanese instructions). Use is easy - menus are self-explanatory and the scanner automatically separates the negatives into their own files so i can put 4 strips of six 35mil negs on and go to sleep... in the morning I have 24 files in PhotoShop at 4800dpi res. (haven't actually tried that on my system ‘cuz I only have a gig or so of RAM but maybe...)
The quality is amazing - my eye can't see any quality lacking in it from a similar resolution drum scan, though the dif could well be there - I'm no 'expert'. I also gotta mention that the Digital ICE thing is really cool. At 4800dpi I can see hardly any grain yet all the detail seems to be there!!! I would love if someone could explain this to me (a bit more detailed than the press release).
I got it in Japan retail for ~$335.
