Epson P-4000 Photo Viewer Announced
Epson Japan have today announced the Epson P-4000 Photo Viewer, a new 80Gb version of the popular Epson P-2000 portable storage device. As well as the increased storage capacity, Epson P4000 adds a slightly more powerful powerful 2600 mAh battery and support for MPEG 4 files and MP3 / AAC files up to 320 kbps. With the ever increasing megapixel size of digital cameras, the P-4000 is a smart move by Epson. The Epson P-4000 is expected to cost 70,000 Yen when it launches at the start of October in Japan.

Mark, does this model have any remote control? That was the main missing ingredient in the past.
I can't remember if it has audio out for ear phones.
TViX mini without an LCD screen has a remote, self-upgradable 2.5" harddrive, USB OTG instead of built in card slots and supports MPEG 1/2/4 MP3 AAC WMA etc.
It is a lot cheaper too.

No LCD ??? That is Epson's most salient feature. It could hardly be
called a Photo "Viewer" without an LCD.

dpreview.com mentioned this new P-4000 has a 3.5" screen, is this a typo?

If you are asking because of my "No LCD" comment, that was made
in reference to the TViX Mini. I have not yet seen any specs on the
Epson P-4000's LCD, but the Epson P-2000 had a 3.8" LCD.

I know that the Epson P2000 and probably the P4000 comes with a VGA resolution LCD.
It is good for viewing on the go or in small groups. Otherwise, a TV is a better viewing option - eg. back in the hotel room, or at a friend's place.
Then a remote control is almost essential for everyone to sit together and watch with some controls.
The main attraction of the Px000s are the codecs. Unfortunately it lacks a remote, and the ability to swap out the hard-drive.

A photo viewer without an LCD is like a laptop without a screen...well,

maybe not quite that bad. Suffice it to say, without an LCD, you have
eliminated one of the primary uses for a photo viewer. The P-2000's
LCD was the best you could get in that size, and I expect the P-4000
to continue with that claim.
Swapping out the unit's hard drive is not a feature I would use with a
40 GB photo viewer, and even less so with the 80 GB model.
As for a photo viewer's remote control capability, that would certainly
be a desirable feature in conjunction with another of its primary uses,
namely, viewing with an external screen; however, even if the P-4000
is lacking remote control capability, that should not be a deal breaker
if its internal LCD quality is your major concern, since you can always
make do with an inexpensive video extension cable when viewing on
an external screen. Still, I hope it does have remote control.

The Epson still stands as the only truly serious digital wallet / viewer.
Most importantsly, it supports almost all the file formats that are used by digital cameras. It has jpeg, tiff, raw etc, and on the movie clips front it has mjpeg, mpeg4-aac (xacti c series), other mp4, mov, avi, etc.
All the formats I've checked it with works.
Many other wallet viewers omit one or the other of the relative common formats for no apparent reason than to frustrate the consumer. I want a wallet viewer to cover for 99% of the digital cameras out there. I myself have at least four different camera series in my family. On larger group occasions, I like to use the wallet to capture shots/movies taken by others. A serious wallet viewer needs to have the codecs for these.
I just rechecked - the TViX mini has no support for mjpeg. http://www.tvix.co.kr
I might have to wait for eternity for the manufacturers to get it all together.
I have been waiting for the P2000's upgrade forever and in the intercurrent period no one seems to have come close to its efforts.
The few drawbacks have however prompted me to wait. It is expensive. There should be a remote. The harddrive is not swappable - ie when the harddrive dies, so does the Px000. I wouldn't swap it out on the field. But harddrives on the go don't last as long.
It also uses a flat file access system whereby it searches through the whole CF/SD for all playable files before showing the list of files on the card. There doesn't seem to be a folder browser for this.
I hope the P4000 delivers.

I'm with you on the P-4000.
FYI, the Zen Vision is similar to the P-2000, not quite as full-featured,
but with a wireless remote, for only $400.

Thanks Gary.
Actually, I'm aware of the Zen Vision.
Unfortunately, Creative's CEO war with Apple may have caused them to leave out AAC support. This is absolutely essential for me as my Sanyo Xacti Cs records mpeg4 with stereo AAC. Nothing but the P2000 thus far have been able to play it back flawlessly and on 640x480 with no skipping at 30fps.
I would be happy to be informed of any other wallet viewer with the codecs of P2000 or more.

Sounds like you've done your homework, and it is encouraging you
arrived at the P-4000 as your best solution, since that's also my top
choice. If its biggest negatives are a non-swapping HD, and lack of
remote control, I could live with those.

Another advantage of the P4000 over the P2000, with cameras like the Nikon D200, D2X and Canon 5D if you take full size pictures the P2000 will not be able to display them. It is limited to 8.x megapixels. The P4000 will diplay 17.x megapixel pictures. But the P4000 will not be able to auto rotate any thing bigger than an 8.x megapixel picture. But that is a very minor thing as you can always turn the viewer to see the non rotated pictures.

Moreover, you can generate an attractive picture by snapping a frame from movie and make a transform with your psersonal picture. Finally, Ladybug Player XP allows you to open multiple windows and watch several movies simultaneously.
