What the blurb does not say is whether the new printer has fax capabilities over and above what it does say about this new multifunction printer.

Apologies to the readers, I missed the part about fax machine. It's there alright. It happens with speed reading and I was concentrating more on CD/DVD printing than fax at the time.

Having just bought one of these so called multifunction machines I have to say I it has been a complete waste of money and time. I have spent the best part of a week trying to figure out how to use the Scan to PDF and the Scan to PC buttons which can be found on the control panel on the front of the machine. Only to discover that this function is only available if the machine is connected via a USB lead. There is no facility for sending a document to fax directly from a pc. You have to print the document first and then manually insert the pages into the ADF and send manually. Surely the whole point of this kind of machine is its versatility or should be. I am seriously considering taking it back to the store for a refund. Think carefully before buying this. My operating system is Vista 64 running 6gB of RAM.

Kevin, I cannot understand how a manufacturer like EPSON could omit functions. I doubt there is no function for sending a document to fax directly from a PC. Take Symantec's WinFax Pro for example, it faxes directly from the PC, so why would Epson's software not do the same. Are you sure you have installed the software correctly? If it was not supplied, Microsoft Fax should work. If the printer has USB and network capabilities, functions should work irrespective of connection. Take up your concerns with EPSON first before taking the machine back to the shop. Shop people generally do not know all the bells and whistles of anything.

Eventually got a reply from Epson see below for details.

In regards to your email, if you are connecting across a network then this is correct, as the printer cannot know which PC to start the scan on. You will need to start the scan from Epson Scan on your PC.

The Scan to function is designed with the direct USB connection in mind.
If you require further assistance please do not hesitate to contact the EPSON Customer Inter@ction Centre and we will endeavour to resolve any further queries you may have.

Ouch! They ALWAYS have the words to rebut questions and deny anything wrong with their equipment or software. However, I can see the sense in the first paragraph. One has to use Epson Scan on the target PC. I do not understand why the "Scan to function" is designed for USB connection. Why is it not controlled by the software on the PC? I have 2 laptops in my main room, and 3 desktops in the computer room. Obviously I will not want to scan anything from the main room's laptops (physical impossibility), so obviously I will use one of the machines that is directly connected to the printer. That makes sense.
Yeah, right, that "if you require further assistance" paragraph is a "yeah right". I have had SO MANY problems with them using their online help system.
Anyway, I cannot get this printer in South Africa yet, because of all the RED TAPE and the "global economic downturn". It's ridiculous. The machine has to be certified by ICASA, then TELKOM (the telephone line provider), and when they have both agreed to the fax system inside the machine they send their reports to Parliament for enactment. In the meanwhile, however, the Rand/Pound exchange rate has changed and GBP299 equates with ZAR4600 or greater. Then there are import charges, customs and excise taxes, importers fees, profit (profiteering and racketeering) and if it passes the mafia bosses here, they make it available to us general public who have waited for YEARS for this machine. Not one other printer manufacturer has brought out such a good machine for home and business users. Not even HP! And that's saying something.
Cheers!
Ian

I find it much easier to 'Scan to Memory Card', and then access it with //PRINTERNAME/MEMORYCARD/ over the network. Better than messing around with clunky Epson software.
