May 13, 2010 at Bonhams New York

New York – Bonhams New York is privileged to host Foundation Rwanda: An Evening of Food & Fotos. Taking place at Bonhams’ Madison Avenue galleries on May 13th, this dynamic event will feature art for activism with several top chefs and artists showcasing fine food and photography to benefit Foundation Rwanda, whose mission is to support the education and well-being of women and children affected by the Rwandan Genocide.

The evening will feature an auction of fine, contemporary photography selected by New Yorker magazine’s Visual Editor Elisabeth Biondi, Aidan Sullivan of Getty Images, and Bill Hunt of HASTED HUNT KRAEUTLER gallery. Among the eclectic selection are works by Eugene Richards, Nigel Parry, Jonathan Torgovnik, Gillian Laub, Pieter Hugo, Paolo Ventura, Steve Pyke, Elinor Carucci, Ruven Afanador, Brent Stirton, Martin Schoeller, Platon and more.

Thirty of New York’s top chefs and mixologists will also take part in the event. Tasting dishes from chefs including Gabe Thompson from dell’anima and L’Artusi, Anita Lo from Annisa, Mike Price from Market Table, and Cedric Vongerichten from Perry Street - in addition to dozens of others – will be presented.

“We are honored to lend our support to such a vital organization,” stated Director of Bonhams New York, Jon King. “The fact that they are not only drawing attention to the situation in Rwanda, but actively helping to make the lives of these children better, is to be applauded and Bonhams New York is happy to offer our help.”

Founded by photographer Jonathan Torgovnik and Jules Shell, Foundation Rwanda was established to improve the lives of children born as a result of sexual violence during the Rwandan genocide by providing funding for their education; linking their mothers to income generating activities and psychological and medical support services; and raising awareness about the consequences of genocide and sexual violence through photography and new media.

Says Shell, “This evening is about bringing together some of New York’s top creative minds, whether they work behind a lens or in the kitchen, and to help empower and support the women and children whose lives were torn apart by this terrible tragedy.”

All proceeds will go to foundation Rwanda. For more information or to buy tickets, please visit www.foundationrwandafoodandfotos.com
