Fujifilm Press Release

FUJIFILM EXTENDS S-SERIES WITH TWO NEW LONG ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERAS

High Performance Meets High Definition with Powerful Zoom Range and Cutting-Edge HD Capabilities

Valhalla, NY, February 2, 2010 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation today announced two new additions to its S-Series line:  The FinePix S1800 and FinePix S2550HD.  Sporting a 12-MegaPixel 1/2.3” CCD, a powerful Fujinon 18x Wide-Angle optical zoom (28mm-504mm equivalent) and an extra large 3.0” High-Contrast LCD and electronic viewfinder, the FinePix S1800 and S2550HD are perfect for advanced amateur photographers who want an affordable, step-up digital camera that will still fit in the palm of their hand.

HD Movie Capture
While both digital cameras have the ability to capture movies in HD quality –720p HD – the S2550HD also has a mini HDMI Port for quick and easy connection to their home theater system.  Both the S1800 and S2550HD can also use Fujifilm’s optional HD Player Kit – which includes an HD Card Reader that connects to your HDTV via HDMI Cable for true digital transfer of HD quality and a wireless Remote Control for video playback from the comfort of your couch – and you maximize your HD experience.

“With the rapidly increasing adoption of HDTV, consumers have changed how they use their digital photographs and movies,” said David Troy, marketing manager, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, Fujifilm North America Corporation. “Fujifilm’s superior image quality with the FinePix S1800 and FinePix S2550HD enables the user to capture still images and shoot video in true HD and realize the benefit of superior image quality and long zoom capabilities with their home entertainment system.”

18x Fujinon Optical Zoom Lens
The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD both feature a Fujinon 18x Wide-Angle optical zoom lens that produces crisp high resolution results throughout the focal range, from 28mm wide-angle to an astounding 504mm telephoto. They also feature Instant Zoom, which enables the user to keep their subject in a shot at long distance by offering a wide viewing area around the frame and then immediately cropping to the subject once the photo is taken.

Smile and Blink Detection
In addition to Fujifilm’s signature Face Detection, Fujifilm has added two fun and valuable features:  Smile Detection recognizes the precise moment your subject smiles and releases the shutter only when this happens; and Blink Detection warns you if any of your subjects have blinked so that you can re-take the photo if necessary.

Tracking Auto Focus (S1800 only)
The FinePix S1800 also has Tracking Auto Focus, which allows users to track a moving subject automatically for still picture capture.

Auto Picture Rotation (S1800 only)
The FinePix S1800 has the useful Auto Picture Rotation that ensures your photos are always viewed the right way in playback. Whether you have taken a landscape or portrait image, you can enjoy your pictures whichever way you are holding the camera, as the image will automatically rotate in the screen for easy viewing.

Image Retrieval
Fujifilm has created a new Picture Search tool which allows you to find photos quickly and easily.  You can search with both digital cameras by whichever Scene Mode the photo was taken.  For instance if you select ‘Portrait,’ you can view all photos shot in Portrait mode, or ‘Macro’ to see all close up shots…etc.  It’s a time saving feature which means that you will no longer have to waste time searching through all your photos to find the ones you are looking for.

The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD also share these additional features:
• 3.0” High-Contrast LCD and Electronic View Finder: The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD are fitted with a high contrast 230K-pixel 3.0” LCD and Electronic View Finder. The high contrast LCD is a considerable benefit in bright light and means that the camera can be pitched at various shooting angles to enable framing of awkward shots, while the Electronic View Finder provides even more flexibility for the user.
• Dual Image Stabilization: Long-zoom cameras need stabilization more than any other compact, with handshake and subject movement a particular problem in low light at telephoto range. The FinePix S1800 and S2550HD reduce blur to a minimum with a mechanically stabilized CCD sensor and high ISO sensitivity (to ISO 6400), so that blur is reduced to an absolute minimum.
• Face Detection and Automatic Red-eye Removal: To provide perfectly exposed and focused portrait shots, the FinePix S1800 and S2550HD are both fitted with Fujifilm’s latest Face Detection technology which is able to track up to 10 faces simultaneously, at almost any angle to the camera. The system instantly corrects red-eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file automatically.

The FinePix S1800 is available in late January 2010 at a retail price of $229.95, and the FinePix S2550HD will be available in February 2010 at a retail price of $249.95.

The S1800 does have a couple extras to make you think twice about spending the extra cash, though. For some reason only the S1800 comes with automatic picture rotation so you can shoot horizontally or vertically without having to right the images later, and Tracking Auto Focus for keeping moving subjects locked in focus until you're ready to shoot.

It's a fantastic camera, but I wonder about the intelligence of company administration that would release so fine a camera as this with NO MEANS OF ATTACHING A POLARIZING FILTER. That strikes me as just plain stupid.

Nice camera. I agree with the above statement. There should be a way to put filters on the lens, and also a big complaint of mine is that fuji still is using the AA batteries. They should use rechargeable batteries similar to the Nikon d 40.

Really nice pictures, optics and CCD sensor comes in good balance, good autofocus. Little slow in serial photos of full pixels. HD, only 720 lines, takes a lot of space on SD, only ~10min/8GB. But it is capable of constant autofocus while shooting movie, feature that was decisive to buy camera.
There should be mic mute when doing zoom.
Overall good value for money.

Just bought the camera without having read any reviews on it. Must say I am impressed with photo quality. the zoom is excellent for wildlife photography, except in poor light, when the subject "blends" into the beckground.
I can't find fault with the picture quality. The camera is god value for money.

Had the camera for almost a month now. Pretty good image quality most especially in daylight or natural light, but not so good (err, bad actually) in poor lighting. Still like the use of AA batteries as I can buy one almost anywhere when my rechargeable AA ran out. The 18x zoom and tracking auto focus are excellent. The use of macro produces superb quality and magnification of really small objects, like insects. Although the camera is far from perfect, it is a good value for money.

Buyers should be aware that Fujifilm's software, whether provided with the camera or downloaded as an update, does not work with any 64-bit windows operating system (read Vista or Windows 7). Fujifilms has no plans to release a 64-bit version of their software. Very disappointing!!!

This is what I'm looking for in a camera. My daughter wants a DSLR, but she is 12 and new to photography. I realy dont think she is ready for a DSLR and I'm not going to put $600 on a camera that I dont know if she will ever learn to use it. This camera has most of a DSLR function with out the price tag. If she can learn to take pictures and not be on auto all the time then maby in the future I might get her a dslr, for now this camera will alow her to learn all the fuction of a dslr. No this will not take good quality pictures of a DSLR I know that. It's still a point and shoot camera. My daughter before Christmas save up her money and got her a $60 vivitar camera. I fet so bad and I knew better. The camera was usless. She use it for a month and then quit taking piturs and hated the picture qulity. This camera I know will out shine the crummy vivitar camera any day. My son who is 2 1/2 now plays with the vivitar camera and he loves it.
