Fujifilm Finepix S3500 Review

March 15, 2005 | Mark Goldstein | PhotographyBLOG | 5 Comments |

Fujifilm Finepix S3500The Fujifilm Finepix S3500 is a 4 megapixel digital camera with a 6x optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 39 - 234 mm on a 35mm camera. First announced in August 2004, the S3500 is now available at a street price of under £200 / $250. Almost one year ago I reviewed the 3 megapixel successor to the S3500, the S3000, which was intuitive to use but suffered badly from only having one slow ISO speed (100) and slightly muted images. Have Fujifilm added enough extra features to make the S3500 a more capable camera and also still remain competitive in the fast-moving digital camera market? Read my review to find out.

Thanks for the effort and the detail provided, helps my appraissal considerably. Especially liked the illustration of the limit in use of camera. Would have liked a measure of the shutter delay time, the comparison with the Olympus SP510 I am considering has a poor delay time of 1.44 seconds. Cheers John

I was extremely impressed with the review wrote. It was easy to understand with enough technicality to be useful without being confusing to the amateur. It has been very helpful in enabling me to make a decision on whether or not to purchase. I found the sample photos informative as to the camera's capabilities. It was also great to see the different views of the camera. Well done - NO COMPLAINTS.

This review of my Fuji Finepix S3500 is very spot on.

I've had my camera since I bought it new in 2004.

While I have taken many pictures with it (and a lot of them are quite good for its capability), I'll agree with this review that composing good photos on the sharper side is very difficult. Also, photographing my young son (who was a toddler at the time) required a lot more lead time before pressing the shutter.

However, for me, the positives are definitely the 6x optical zoom, which was my main criteria for the camera that met my budget at the time. Also, day time urban shots came up well for me, in addition to taking on-road shots while at wheel, due to its ergonomics. The mini-SLR look also appealed to me, as it felt like holding a small SLR (even though it falls far short).

I used the train on the weekend quite a lot 3-4 years back, and I found that the in-carriage lighting worked quite well for the camera, where I've captured shots that show a little movement.

Although my S3500 continues to operate reliably, I've now, as at 2010, replaced this camera with:
1) Olympus T-100, and
2) Nikon D3000 DSLR.

This camera has done well to introduce me to the concepts of photography, in the areas of composition, exposure, and timing.

As it is my first digital camera, I thought I'd write this article six years after its press release :).
