Fujifilm FinePix S5500 Zoom Review

March 17, 2005 | Mark Goldstein | PhotographyBLOG | 6 Comments |

Fujifilm Finepix S5500The Fujifilm FinePix S5500 Zoom is the successor to the 3 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix S5000 Zoom that I reviewed back in June 2004. The Fujifilm S5500 looks very much like a traditional SLR camera in terms of styling and has a massive 10x optical zoom which is equivalent to 37-370mm on a 35mm camera. The Fujifilm S5500 has a number of improvements when compared to its predecessor, including a 4 megapixel sensor, histogram playback, custom white balance control, 100% frame coverage and higher quality video mode. Have Fujifilm added enough improvements to the S5500 Zoom so that it can still remain competitive today? Find out in my review.

Greetings, I thought the review was vry informative and have bought an s5500. Aware of your comment re indoor shooting I took a lot of pictures indoors to see what you meant and coudn't fault it. Even under tungsten lighting with no flash it has retuned very good images. When I have had some more practise with it I will post some pictures. Good review, very helpful wonderful camera, I am a happy puppy.

Thank you very much for the thorough and detailed review.

I have been searching long and hard for a decent camera review site on the net, and, in particular, an in-depth review of this camera, and I must say I was blown away by this article.

Thank you again for your time and dedication,
excellent work,

Miguel.

I found this review very usefull, thanks.
I have just ordered a S5500 and I am looking forward to trying it out having only used a simple point and shoot digital camera previously. This camera does seem to have great reviews on all the websites I have visited. Value for money I'm sure I have purchased a cracking deal at only £179 including delivery. I'll up date you once I have had a go with it. Thanks for the information and honesty within your review.

bought the fuji s5500 nov. 2004 and i love it, i use it mainly for hill walking and around the house, it replaces for me the my well known but obsolete slr which although was more versatile and precise was at least double the weight and size (not counting the lenses), that added to the super 10x zoom and most of the features of a real slr make it my perfect choice, in fact i do not feel in the least jealous of a colleague who has just purchased a new digital slr for around £2000

I bought this camera in late 2004, and am still using it regularly in early 2008, even though I now have a Nikon D40x. It's been an excellent bit of kit, very versatile and reliable.
One fault has developed - one photosite is now permanently white. There's no way of repairing the sensor, but the images are easily fixed with the clone tool during post-processing.
Image quality beats most current compacts - the S5500 might only have 4 megapixels, but they're 4 very good megapixels. Images do need some sharpening though.
Great camera, and I'm not planning to retire it any time soon!
