hipjib is a new accessory that converts common tripods and monopods into a highly flexible camera support within seconds. The clever device allows the full weight of the camera and tripod/monopod to rest on your hips (hence the name). Additionally, hipjib can be worn using shoulder straps, thus enabling the cameraman to adjust the height and achieve greater flexibility if the shot requires them to walk as they film. "hipjib enables beautifully steady camera movements and mobile camera stability," the inventor says. "It instantly creates the comforting feeling of solid support and freedom of movement."
hipjib - THE UNCHAINED CAMERA 2.0
The ultimate handy tool for both filmmakers and filming photographers offers a fresh perspective on mobility and brand new filming techniques.
STATE OF THE ART
Tripod, jibarm, shoulder-mount, dolly, and steadycam make for the traditional arsenal of professional productions. The higher the quality, the bigger the tag of investment and weight. In the trenches of documentary filming, Gert Wagner developed a small tool that allowed him to reduce his gear to a minimum while offering great flexibility and new techniques. Worn on a belt where it affixes two legs of any common tripod that extend outward, giving the cameraman a long lever to operate with, it is adequately called the hipjib. The mechanism is simple, yet combines stability and flexibility for camera moves from high above the head to close to the ground.
THE NEW 'SHOOTING FROM THE HIP'
The main ingredients are: hipjib, camera, and any ordinary tripod with a video head. The learning curve is fast and great results come with ease. As your tripod hovers in mid air, hipjib's rotatable axis allows the camera to move from turf to top in one swoop, all while adjusting camera-tilt. It moves like a jibarm, feels like a shoulder-mount, but weighs and costs only a fraction.
Setup is easy - tie hipjib around your waist with the click of the buckle. Next, plant two legs of your tripod or your monopod in the holes and start filming. Want to shoot with your tripod on the ground? Your camera is already mounted on it. Moving between hipjib and static shots takes seconds only, greatly accelerating your work flow. More than replacing other equipment, hipjib will allow the cameraman to accomplish shots otherwise not possible. For instance, on unstable or shaky ground, the operator’s legs will compensate for movements while still performing smooth booms. Its sheer size will allow you to use it in locations where bringing anything bigger is simply not an option.
Additionally, hipjib can be worn using shoulder straps, thus enabling the cameraman to adjust the height and achieve greater flexibility if the shot requires them to walk as they film.
hipjib was developed and tested by German filmmakers and engineers. Its main component clenches around the turnable tube containing the holes for tripod or monopod. The belt or the shoulder straps attach to the back of the unit. The minimal weight of hipjib lets you forget you are wearing it. With two tripod-legs inserted into hipjib (the third remains retracted), one hand is used to hold the handle of the video head. Thanks to the long lever, camera moves enjoy a great deal of precision and stability. For greater control, especially with extreme perspectives, it is recommended to attach a small monitor with the supplied clip to one of the tripod legs.
The recommended camera weight is up to 6.6 lb (3 kg). Measuring 10” (25cm) in length and 5" (5 cm) in width, hipjib can fit almost anywhere. And weighing a mere 0.9 lbs, one is bound to save on excess baggage fees hipjib is made in Germany and slated for a February 2014 release, available at stores for MSRP $195 (excl. tax).
