HP Photosmart R817 Review at Steves Digicams
DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the new HP Photosmart R817, which offers 5 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom lens.
“Image quality was what we have come to expect from HP. When using its 5M *** mode, it produces sharp images with great exposure and color saturation. Its 5x optical zoom lens offers a more versatile range when compared to typical 3x zoom digicams. I did notice an average amount of noise in High/Low contrast areas (especially at higher ISOs), but nothing that will be visible in your average 4x6 to 8x10-inch prints.”

QUESTION: With the R507 and R607 each having a 4.1 megapixel, 1/2.5" CCD, and the R707 having a 5.1 megapixel, 1/1.8" CCD, and the R717 having a 6.1 megapixel, 1/1.8" CCD, why did HP revert to a lackluster 5.1 megapixel, minuscule 1/2.5" CCD for the R817?
I can only guess it must have something to do with the 5x optical zoom, where they needed to use a smaller image circle to keep the lens dimensions sufficiently small for an ultra-compact camera, but could not squeeze more than 5.1 megapixels onto a 1/2.5" CCD without taking a big hit on noise.

They did it just to get on your tits, Gary, because they knew you were waiting for a favourable camera in this piece of crap from HP.
It's HP. What were you exoecting? They already decided to pull out of the Asian market because of poor sales earlier this year.
Yeah keep guessing.

Must be more to it than the "lack-of-quality" or "glandular" reasons you suggest. I see that Ricoh did the same thing with their 4.8x optical zoom Caplio R1V and R2, and now with their 7.1x optical zoom Caplio R3.
