Now this seems a wonderful idea for the 30k negatives and transparencies we have. As with the earlier comment above however without DIGITAL ICE Technology or similar the extra workload makes it worthless to me. I would rather scan a few negatives with dust and scratches minimised by the scanner technology than lots and then have extra years of work in Photoshop. 2c

I've stayed away from HP cr@ptastic products ever since I had one of their previous "high-end" scanners. It had the worst drivers I've ever seen. The scanner would stop being recognized by my system. Then the uninstall for the driver was incomplete. HP actually recommended that I reinstall windows everytime I needed to reinstall the drivers. I finally found that deleting a ton of entries in the registry did the job.
The clincher was when the glass, on the scanner, developed a thick white haze. HP refused to repair it under warranty. I finally replaced my $700 HP scanner with an Epson and have been really pleased with it. I no longer buy anything HP (or Compaq).

I am extremely confused with the USB interface of HP product ... they will say it is USB2.0 high speed and then upon enquiry to their technician, it turned out the transfer speed is only USB1.1 and of course they are all USB2.0 compatitible ... then they keep on saying there is a difference between USB2.0 hi speed and USB2.0 full speed ... but even worse, they can make up their mind which one is of a higher speed ... ie, the true 480 mps for a generic USB2.0.
I further understand there is no scanner produced by HP using the generic USb2.0 Speed, all are using only USb1.0 OR 1.1 SPEED.

"The HP Scanjet 4890 Photo Scanner is both PC and Mac compatible

via Hi-Speed USB."
All that means is that you can plug it into a PC or Mac USB 2.0 port
and it will run. It says nothing about at what speed it will run, which
could be high (480 Kb/s), full (12 Kb/s) or low (1.5 Kb/s) speed.
Of course, I agree that it leads you to think that the scanner runs at
high speed.

When I bought it, my HP 4890 was already missing the ribbon connector inside the lid that connects the "dongle" tail to the printed circuit board that serves the buttons on the lid. I didn't notice this error until I tried to use the buttons after the warranty expired and asked HP to send the missing part.
They wouldn't send a replacement ribbon, citing "tooling" issues. Then they had the nerve to offer a refurbished unit for nearly the same price I paid for the original!!
I am capable of installing it myself (that's how I discovered it was missing) and just want an otherwise excellent unit to do all that it's made to do.
(I called the "HP approved" repair company that HP referred me to and they said that HP keeps sending repair customers to them, even though they don't even handle HP products at ALL!!)
Does anyone know a place that sells this part?

I have an HP Scanjet 4800 series phot scanner. The HP Image Zone Solftware for this scanner kept crashing. Now I am trying to replace with Premier but trying removing it from my programs does not respond. Now nothing works.
