Kerala and the South of India is more verdant and tropical than the North. People tend to be more friendly and whilst it still has a pace and a sense of the exotic, it is more relaxed. The food is completely different too: hotter and with more coconut! This exclusive travel photography tour visits many of the highlights of the region but also takes you off the beaten track to some hidden gems.
If this is your first trip to India, this will be the perfect introduction to this incredible country, and if you have been to India before, then this will be something utterly different to entrance you further.
Kerala is the land of festivals. Each of the many temples will have at least one festival a year. All of them seem to have a few temple elephants and they often lend them to each other so that each festival will be more spectacular! These elephants are paraded around the temple compounds, decorated with golden caparisons with drummers and sometimes thousands of pilgrims.
Our tour is scheduled to coincide with the festival at the Poornathrayeesa Temple at Thrippunithura near Kochi. The festival isn’t the biggest in the region, but should have at least a dozen caparisoned elephants in line abreast! The festival is also a good time to see the spectacular religious Kathakali dancing where costumed dancers act out scenes from Hindu mythology.
As well as visiting the recognised highlights of this most relaxed of Indian states, such as Kochi, the Periyar National Park and the fabled backwaters around Alleppey, we also head off the beaten track, to the tea plantations at Munnar, Vembanad Lake and the Arabian Sea coast at Varkala. We also cross into nearby Tamil Nadu to visit the incredible temple town of Madurai.
The tour departs from Cochin, India on the 24 November for 14 days, and costs £1395 excluding flights. More information about this departure on http://www.BetterTravelPhotography.com/kerala
