Leica Press Release

LEICA S2 body to have suggested retail price of £15,996 (inc VAT) with first units from October 2009

Leica has published the suggested retail prices for its new Leica S-System and confirmed October 2009 as the first month for UK availability. The S-System, which sits at the very top end of the digital photography spectrum, will be offered at a very competitive starting price of £15,996 (SRP, body only).

The Leica S-System has been well documented since its launch at Photokina in 2008, and now the release of pricing and availability information brings the world’s high end photo community another important step closer to one of the most significant photo developments in the digital era.

Leica has also confirmed that it will be marketing a series of specialised camera and lens user support/service packages for the S-System and further details will be released soon.

Jon Sareen, UK commercial manager, Leica S-System, commented, “The eagerly-anticipated Leica S-System is a very new and different challenge for Leica Camera Ltd, in comparison to other products in our range. We have engaged new experts, and arrangements regarding leasing and rental facilities are well under way. Service and support will be very hot topics for Leica S-System users, and we can confirm that we are planning a rapid third party UK solution, to work in conjunction with our head office in Germany.”

First announced in September last year, the Leica S-System redefines the professional DSLR class with a custom 37.5-megapixel, 30 x 45 mm sensor built into a 35mm-sized body.

That's what, something like three times the price of the absolute top end models from Canon or Nikon?

Those little red dots must be made of pure compressed unobtainium to send the price so high!

Not only the price is insane but buying a camera from a company who 1- Does not deliver any support anymore for their DMR module 2- Two of my DMR batteries are worn out and Leica?... They do not supply any batteries anymore! A 4900,00 Euro DMR module is in fact totally obsolete. They even do not reply to any of their customers e-mails!Buying the S2, never. Hasselblad delivers a fantastic camera system for far less. I'm using Leica for the past 40 years, I own 6 leca bodies and around 25 lenses etc. etc. I never buy anything from Leica again. It will be Hasselblad and Nikon.

Buying from the people who made the M8??? I don't think so: http://web.mac.com/kamberm/Leica_M8_Field_Test,_Iraq/Page_1.html

To Willem van Beers: I seem to remember that Hasselblad bought the company that programmed the software for the DMR. Leica then stopped supporting the DMR but they have never told us why. I suppose Hasselblad demanded "Leica-prices" for the software.

Hallo Jorgen, The DMR modul was manufactured by Leica, Kodak and Imacon. Imacon did merge with Hasselblad and were responsable for the development of the new Hasselblad H series. Wonderful camera's. I own a M3, M4, M4-2, M7, 2xR8, DMR and about 20 lenses: Summicrons, Elmarits, Noctilux etc. The first 3 M's operate perfectly well no problems in seawater atmosphere.
The R8's are OK but their controls are also not recessed same problem as your M8. The white balance from the DMR is the same disaster as the M8, I took 8 photos from the same subject the series ran from Cyan to dark yellow, buffer always full, slow etc. My job is not as risky as yyours but in Beaufort 7 on the Med you also must rely on your equipment. And Leica: No replies to your e-mails, Service takes weeks to months, a promise is nothing and they simply stop supplying batteries for the DMR no updates for the absolutely lousy firmware. So buying a S2 no no never. That will be Hasselblad with a superior service here in Holland and you get a 50 Meg for the price of a 35Meg S2. And I think a Nikon D3x instead of Leica. It's a silly idea buying a Nikon after 4o+ years of Leica photography. But O.K. Times are changing. Regards Willem

Leica Camera GmbH needs a reality check...

Not only their cameras are priced out of the market, but they are constantly lagging behind Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax and a few others in the innovation department. The ONLY thing they do right is their optics. But that is not enough to keep them alive for much longer - even with the support of their fanatic client-base. I know, I won't buy any more Leica equipment...

Willem, the web-site I linked to is not mine. I have never even owned a Leica or seriously considered buying one. However, there must be something very special about Leica since so many buy it despite the prices, despite the lack of innovation as Ron points out and despite the fact that their cameras are not made for photographers: take bottom off to change the SD card, no shortcut buttons on the back to change exposure compensation, ISO, focusing system, metering etc. Now, Nikon, they make cameras for photographers.

Hello Jorgen, Sorry that I did send you to Iraq and Somalia! The only reason to buy Leica equipment is that their lenses are far superior to any Japanese lens. Even 30 year old lenses are still more than up to date to current standards. The problem is that they are not successful in their camera technology. The fact that they will NOT introduce a new full frame 35mm R10 is that the camera would be as expensive as the D3x but lagging miles behind the Japanese technology by the way this was a statement of Leica! I own a pretty big number of Leica M lenses but there is no reliable M camera available so I still use them with my trusfull film M camera's.

I see some people moaning about the price of the Leica S2 in comparison with a Hasselblad and yet when I compare prices on the Robert White photo equipment web site I find that the S2 is competitively priced and in line with similar spec medium format.

As such it would appear that the reasons are not price or if they are then those concerned have not truly checked the comparative pricing and have rejected the S2 without checking their facts.
