Leica V-Lux 1 Review at CNET

Mark Goldstein | Digital Compact Cameras | December 4, 2006 | 1 Comments

Leica V-Lux 1CNET have reviewed the Leica V-Lux 1, which has a 10 megapixel sensor, 35-420mm lens and optical image stabilizer.

“The most attractive feature of the Leica V-Lux 1 is its big, fast, lens: a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 12x optical, 35mm-to-420mm (35mm equivalent), f/2.8-to-f/3.7 zoom. Coupled with Panasonic’s Mega OIS optical image stabilization, this lens’s long reach becomes even more useful, but it would’ve been better if the lens was wider than 35mm. Since not many superzooms go that wide, it’d be a nice selling point and would help when trying to shoot group portraits. Of course, that’d probably push the price of this camera up even more, and it definitely doesn’t need that.”

The V-Lux 1 is a well made, sturdy and rather large DSLR and so is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50. I have used both cameras and give the Leica a slight edge on build. Both cameras produce excellent results in both RAW and JPEG format. Leica has a slight edge in the image department because it does not use as an aggressive noise reduction algorithm and thus does not produce Panasonic's dreaded "watercolor" effect. I was in need of a camera for nature shots and the Leica with its image-stabilized 12X zoom fits the bill perfectly. Oh yes, the red Leica badge on the camera body doesn't hurt either!
