We attended the UK launch of the new Leica X1 digital camera in Mayfair, London. Leica were only showing a non-working sample of the X1 behind glass, hence our brief look at what could well turn out to be a relatively mass-market camera for the German manufacturer. Click through to see 6 up close and personal photos of the Leica X1.

i was hoping the leica X1 would be a interchangeable lens camera.
there is disappointment. I certainly would not cough up $ 2000 for
35 mm cam. an 'affordable' leica version of the m4/3 system would
have received a lot of interest from a lot of amateur photo buffs
and pro's. it's gonna be panasonic for me !

The X1 is a pocket camera - supposed to be carried around everywhere - not in a camera bag with an array of lens and gear.

I am very excited that X1 is a fixed lens camera with no zoom. The ability to zoom makes me lazy to seek the best spot to take pictures from - and this shows. Also having a fixed 35mm lens makes it easy to 'learn the camera' and its scope.

Neither X1 nor M9 can replace the need for a DSLR system for many situations (sports, studio work, closeups etc.).

No zoom lens, no built in optical view finder, no manual focusing or aperture control on lens (on this day and age), this is another nail on Leica's coffin and not a success story.

Without a DSLR Leica days are over

Well I have been looking for a long time for a digital replacement for my Contax T2 and this finally looks like it might fit the bill. APS C sensor rather than 1/1.7" found on other "high end compacts" so 8.5x bigger, plus all the manual controls and a 35mm (equiv) f2.8 lens. All wrapped up in what looks like a very desirable package. Am sure the price will make my eyes water but I expect I'll end up buying this little beauty anyway!

I know, wouldn't it be nice if there were some great DSLRs out there. Leica could really fill and compete in that under served niche.

I am definitely buying this assuming the lens and sensor provide what they should in terms of resolution and quality.

Well, I really don't think these shots are much better than what I can take with my G10, which is similarly sized.
