Magnum Workshops in Budapest with Ian Berry & Chris Steele-Perkins
In conjunction with two Magnum Photos’ exhibitions - Magnum First and Magnum contact Sheets, respectively presented at the Hungarian House of Photography and the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center from May 26th to August 24th – Magnum Photos are very proud to announce a new 5 day workshop in Budapest led by esteemed Magnum photographers Ian Berry and Chris Steele-Perkins.
Organized from May 28th to June 1st, 2014, this exclusive workshop will give limited participants a rare opportunity to refine their photographic practice and sense of authorship under the guidance of Magnum’s progressive photographers.
Ian Berry will help his participants to understand how best approach and pursue their career, developing their visual language, photographic identity, and the expertise required to compete in a changing marketplace.
He expects each participant to arrive with at least a dozen of their best images and an idea of what they want to do with their photography in the long run. He will tutor each photographer individually and enjoin each person to undertake either a specific project of his choosing or a theme more closely relating to their individual ambitions.
Each participant’s work will be reviewed daily as a group into a comprehensive educational critique.
On the fifth day, everyone will be asked to participate to the editing process of the best work which can then be presented in a cohesive form for a public projection.
Chris Steele-Perkins wants to put his participants in a real-time situation, of doing a real job, asking each participant to be part of team which will, during 5 days of hard work, be commissioned to make a magazine about Budapest (no money, this is a concept “magazine” but I expect people to work as hard as if it were a real-life commission).
The students will be asked to come up with at least two ideas for the subject they will follow. Through a daily program of shooting, editing and sequencing with group feedbacks, Chris Steele-Perkins will help turning them into a better photographer, and one who thinks carefully about what they are trying to achieve.
At the end of the period the participants will be provided with the pdf of the magazine group project they will have created. They can print off at home for a hard copy of this Special Edition.
The conditions of the workshop, in small groups of 13 participants maximum, will contribute to create an intimate and strong atmosphere. The workshop will end with a public projection of the work produced during the 5 days.
As part of a special partnership with the British Journal of Photography, they will work with each Magnum tutor to identify a deserving workshop participant per class, who will enjoy a special online feature of their work accompanied by an interview.
Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest
The Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center was founded in Budapest in 2013. The fruition of this project is the culmination of several years of work, built upon the important milestone of purchasing and bringing Robert Capa’s estate to Hungary in 2008. Aiming to stand out as a national and European institution, it promotes the genre of photography through contemporary approaches and tools. The tasks of the new visual institute are to organize an important numbers of projects related to photography such as exhibitions, workshops and publications of books.
The Capa Center opened its doors in December 2013 as both an exhibition space and a training center. It offers workshop participants a chance to explore the heritage of Magnum’s founding member, Robert Capa, a Hungarian-born photographer.
Special scholarship program for Hungarian photographers
The Capa Center offers 5 scholarships to Hungarian photographers to participate at the MAGNUM WORKSHOP. Interested photographers must participate at the CAPA PORTFOLIO REVIEW in order to be selected by the professional committee. Details of the scholarship and the review can be found here.
Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and a desire to learn. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. Each workshop is limited to 13 participants and photographers will be selected on the perceived benefit to their career and development.
Photographers should prepare sufficient research relating to what they wish to shoot prior to arrival. A story list will be provided for inspiration; however candidates are expected to formulate realistic projects in the geography and time supplied. Magnum will provide a suitable classroom infrastructure and participants will be responsible for their own time management.
Due to the fast pace of the workshop Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be coordinated where required. Please note – all workshops will be conducted in English.
